We recently connected with Betsy Lane and have shared our conversation below.
Betsy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
It’s always hard to be in business and is always a little risky. I have been in business for many years and one needs to be ready for changes. In the last 40 years I’ve experienced many changes including the invention of the computer. In the art business in the older days we would need to get a slide from the artist, have it developed, and send the picture in the mail to the client. This could take quite a bit of time. If you don’t keep up with the times you risk not being relevant and one needs to adapt to be successful.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a former artist and gallery owner I wanted to be free of long hours spent inside waiting for someone to purchase a piece or see an exhibition. I was collaborating with designers and starting curating a sculpture garden on a property owned by Stephanie Parisi in Del Mar and at the Four Seasons Resort in Carlsbad CA. The design firm and the resort gave me freedom and provided a beautiful setting to meet with clients. As my business grew we started working with developers, hotels, and private collectors. As an art consultant we realize that educating and bringing art to a project adds many positive aspects to each community. It’s been amazing to learn from all the design teams and getting to know so many people has been a reward that I really appreciate. Each client has a unique aspect and we help plan, budget, and provide an opportunity for the community to thrive

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Many of our projects take years to develop and the reward for working hard is seeing the final result. The art is usually the last piece to be placed on a project and it’s very satisfying to see the final result.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I started before computers were available and did not work for anyone involved in art. I love seeing the work of many art consultants and it helps keep me inspired. There are so many resources and creatives and it’s always important to keep an open mind to different approaches and styles. It’s been a great journey appreciating what other art consultants have accomplished.
