We recently connected with Beto Azout and have shared our conversation below.
Beto, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
One of the biggest opportunities I’ve had with my company SoStereo, has been to change the lives of many up & coming artists. There are around 60,000 songs uploaded to Spotify on a daily basis. Out of those 60,000, the majority ends up being music by artists that unfortunately don’t have the resources to get their music placed in commercials, tv or film. The majority of those artists also can’t solely rely on streaming services providing enough income to get by.
This is where we step in. We create an opportunity for artists to get an additional revenue stream by placing their music in branded/video content with major brands and creators. The beauty of it all comes when the brand and the artist pair up, the artist gets so excited to share the campaign and the story behind it all, it really changes things in a positive way.
A good example of this can be seen back in our early days when we worked with Budweiser for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In order to provide the brand with an ‘edgy and modern’ track for their ad, SoStereo enlisted the Venezuelan DJ and producer Felmax. Upon the release of the campaign, Felmax tweeted that he had arrived in the US as a refugee at the age of 8 ‘with nothing,’ was an avid soccer fan, and that he ‘could not believe’ his track was on a Budweiser commercial for the World Cup. In his own words, it was proof that ‘dreams do come true.’
We live in the content explosion era and brands really need independent artists to make their content memorable & authentic.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Beto Azout, cofounder of SoStereo, a music platform based in Miami and LA, cofounded with Salo Sterental. SoStereo enables brands to unlock the marketing power of music. We are working with a growing global network of 10,000 diverse emerging artists across the planet and make their music accessible for commercial use, which can then lend unique quality and authenticity to any piece of branded content.
Through SoStereo, artists with hundreds of thousands – even millions – of streams are suddenly at a brand’s fingertips. Those artists also stand to receive a significant portion (a majority) of the fees paid by the brand. The contrast with the stock library model, replete with forgettable music and limited rewards for artists (if any), could hardly be more profound.
For brands looking to elevate their content via culturally relevant music without breaking the bank, navigating our platform will feel as familiar as browsing a streaming service such as Spotify or Apple Music. It’s built to provide high-quality audio to give a sense of an artist and is curated by SoStereo’s in-house team. Users can search, for example, for a soul artist based in Tennessee as easily as they can find a folk singer in Britain.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being obsessed with our customers has been key for our growth and reputation. Understanding what their needs are, what their pain-points are is crucial. Once you have a good understanding, then you build your team and your product around it. It might sound simple but our priority is to make our clients happy and work hard so that they return. There are no shortcuts in the advertising industry. In order to earn the trust and respect in the market, you have to know what your values are and stick with them.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Communicate as much as you can to your team. The more they know, the more they can understand. The more they understand, the more commitment they will have to your mission.
