We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bethany Walter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bethany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
One of the biggest things I have done differently from other photographers is to limit the number of weddings I take. Years ago, I thought being a successful photographer meant working as any weddings as possible and working a double to triple wedding weekend. Since then, I’ve learned that working the number of weddings I want to work is a much better gauge of how successful I am. There’s a season for everything and right now, to be the best photographer I can be, 12- 16 weddings a year with clients I am a great fit with is the definition of success for me. This allows me to be the best version of myself on wedding day – the photographer my client’s deserve – and allows me to be the best wife and mother!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Bethany, a wedding photographer in St Augustine, Florida and covering surrounding areas in North Florida. I help couples preserve fleeting moments using my creative vision and my sarcastic sense of humor to keep them laughing. When they go home at the end of the night, I make sure they experience the magic of their day again and again.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love preserving memories for families. My parents were not, and still are not, big photo people. We don’t have a lot of pictures of me growing up and I don’t think we have any family pictures from when I was younger. It wasn’t until years after I started my business that I got a family picture of us. And it was hard fought to get that one!
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a photographer and a creative is that a moment in time is preserved. When life goes on and we change or lose people, there is a snap shot of a moment we can hold on to. It’s tangible. It’s how we show future generations where we came from and who our families are and were. Years down the road, a wedding album is an heirloom for your grandchildren’s grandchildren. These moments deserve to be preserved!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth! When client’s share their experience, it’s a big help for small businesses!
