Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Osborn
Hi Bethany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic, I founded adaswim. Creativity has always run through my veins, and I often found myself searching for a unique outlet to express it. My mother taught me how to sew when I was young, so one day during the pandemic, while online shopping, I realized how often I was purchasing swimsuits that only lasted a year or two before they started to show signs of wear and tear. The high prices didn’t align with the quality and longevity, so I decided to give it a try on my own. I picked up a sewing machine, and for me, history was made. When I showed the product to my roommates and friends, they encouraged me to start a small business. However, something stood in the way. Living in Hawai’i, I saw firsthand the repercussions of plastic, various waste, and over production. I didn’t want to be part of an industry that contributes to around 92 million tons of textile waste yearly. If this was going to happen, every detail needed to be ecologically and ethically conscious.
I am deeply passionate about creating a sustainable company because I want to protect the environment and ensure that my business does not add to the global waste crisis. My dedication to sustainability is rooted in a profound respect for nature and a desire to preserve the planet for future generations. This drive is also influenced by the pristine beauty of Hawai’i, where the impacts of pollution and waste are starkly visible. I believe that every business has a responsibility to reduce its environmental footprint and that sustainable practices should be the norm, not the exception.
Eventually, through extensive research and testing, I found sustainable options that utilize repurposed waste. All the fabric used by adaswim is made from post-consumer plastics, including recycled yarn, recycled fishing nets, and other recycled materials. The thread is made from 100% post-consumer plastic bottles, and all shipping packaging is biodegradable. The clothing tags are made with seed paper, which not only biodegrades but also blooms into wildflowers when planted. All of the swimsuits are handmade by me in my studio with good intentions and made to order, in order to reduce waste. Made to order ensures there is no excess inventory waste, unlike larger companies that hold onto unsold stock. While it may take longer for customers to receive their suits after ordering, this process guarantees quality and transparency, allowing customers to know exactly where their swimsuits are being made and from what materials. By choosing adaswim, customers are supporting a brand that prioritizes the health of our planet and promotes a sustainable future.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting adaswim in the midst of a pandemic certainly presented its challenges. At just 21 years old, juggling the demands of entrepreneurship with my studies in college was no small feat. One of the biggest hurdles was financing the startup entirely from my own savings. The uncertainty of the economy added another layer of difficulty, especially in recent years with the economic downturn. It’s been a constant battle to gain customers, especially knowing that many people are tightening their budgets.
Additionally, I made the decision to move production to Bali for about two years. While it was an incredible experience, I soon realized it wasn’t the right move for the company. The production model began to resemble other businesses that order wholesale and generate waste, which went against the core values of sustainability that adaswim was founded on. Recognizing this, I decided to shift away from that approach and return to my roots of handmade, made-to-order swimwear that prioritizes quality and minimizes waste. Despite the obstacles, each challenge has only fueled my determination to succeed and make a positive impact on the planet.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At adaswim, we are more than just a swimwear brand; I’m on a mission to redefine fashion sustainability. What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to environmental consciousness at every step of my process. From conception to creation, I prioritize eco-friendly practices, ensuring that each piece not only looks stunning but also contributes to a healthier planet.
I specialize in handmade sustainable swimwear, meticulously crafted right here in Hawai’i. What makes me truly unique is my dedication to a made-to-order model. Unlike larger companies that focus on mass production and excess inventory, I prioritize quality and sustainability. Each swimsuit is handmade with care and tailored specifically for the individual customer. This approach not only reduces waste but also ensures that each piece is crafted with intention and precision.
By choosing adaswim, customers are not just purchasing swimwear; they’re joining a movement towards a more sustainable future. My offerings go beyond fashion; they represent a commitment to ethical consumerism and environmental stewardship. With adaswim, my customers can feel good about what they wear, knowing that their choices are making a positive impact on the planet.
Whether you’re lounging on the beach or catching waves, adaswim empowers you to look and feel your best while making a difference.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future of adaswim are focused on returning to our roots and strengthening our commitment to sustainability. After manufacturing in Bali for the past two years, I’ve made the decision to transition back to our original model of being made-to-order. This shift allows us to ensure zero waste in our production process and maintain complete control over the quality of each piece.
Moving forward, every swimsuit will be sewn by me, the owner, personally. This not only guarantees the highest level of craftsmanship but also reinforces our dedication to transparency and accountability. Customers can trust that each adaswim piece is made with care and attention to detail.
In addition to our manufacturing changes, I’m also exploring ways to expand our product line while staying true to our sustainable principles. Whether it’s introducing new eco-friendly fabrics or designing innovative swimwear styles, I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of fashion sustainability. A men’s line may or may not be in the works…
Overall, I’m looking forward to the journey ahead and the opportunity to make an even greater impact on the fashion industry and the planet. With adaswim, the future is bright, stylish, and sustainable.
