Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bethany “Orá” Cruz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bethany “Orá”, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I taught myself many elements of creating during the pandemic after my martial arts career was put on hold. I immersed myself in mural tag-alongs, late nights of art, YouTube videos, experimented with my Nikon D-7200, and learned through trial and error. To speed up my learning, I always believe in the power of a mentor. Essential skills for growth are the ability to make mistakes, be persistent, and think out-of-the-box. My biggest hurdle was the fear of failure. However, I’ve overcome that mentally with the simple concept that “there are no rules to art.” If a taped banana could be considered ART, so is my work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey began during the pandemic when my martial arts career was put on hold, due to it being a contact sport. Creating was a way to explore new outlets and quickly became my passion. I offer a variety of services including photography, videography, marketing strategies, mural painting, customized commission art, and much more. Martial arts has given me leverage and a sense of discipline in addition to my corporate experience, which helps me understand and exceed client expectations on a business level. Creating takes commitment, which I’ve learned to embrace throughout my years in sports. My goal is driven by bringing creative vision to life with high-quality visuals that resonate and captivate the masses on all creative realms.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Throughout my creative journey, I’ve had to embrace the concept that I AM a creative. Unlearning the general concept that creation should be regulated or directed, was a major challenge that I’ve had to overcome. As a self-taught artist, I was under the impression that school or classes were the only way to learn. However, I was extremely wrong. Consistency and flow is how you learn. Freedom is the best part about creating. Thinking outside of the box, is essential to growth in art. Polishing old techniques and assembling new ones is the secret to creating. Individuality is priceless in the art world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is the ability to capture and convey emotions, stories, and moments that resonate with people. Seeing the impact my work has on clients, whether it’s through a beautifully photographed event, a powerful branding image, or a customized painting, brings me immense satisfaction. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my creativity can produce lasting memories and meaningful connections for others.
