We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bethany Chatten. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bethany below.
Bethany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Within the western/cowboy world, there are a lot of traditions and when I began making my Wild Rags, I wanted to stand out from those traditional patterns with something unique, that not only were directed at those in the western/cowboy lifestyle, but also to those who just wanted a nice neck scarf for their own lifestyles outside of the western/cowboy world. Thus began my journey to bring in unique fabric patterns that anyone could enjoy.
Bethany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
What started out 3 years ago as making wild rags (aka “cowboy scarves”) for myself and friends, has became my own personal brand and business. Through the power of social media, and good friends, I’m still going strong and looking forward to an even better year in 2024.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I began selling on Etsy, then had a website, but ultimately I’m back to Etsy. It’s user friendly and honestly has the right amount of structure and affordability that suits my style. I liked the creative freedom I had with my own website but I always wanted to nitpick it and fuss over it. I’m a big Etsy fan.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
So I have a couple different fabric suppliers, but I do have one favourite and I prefer them because I am supporting artists and getting neat fabric at the same time. The downside is that the fabric is nearly double the price of the other vendors. I spent probably 3 months researching and looking for the right fabric vendor and I will probably stick with this one for a long time.
