We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bethanie Jean . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bethanie below.
Alright, Bethanie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
“THE JOY REVISION” is my design company. I always dreamed of being an Interior Designer, but what I really was.. was a Hairstylist! I was also a seasoned Style Expert & Host. I love to interview!
In full life styling, I have the privilege of helping my clients find their own joy by stylizing every aspect of their life in a very intentional curation to their own purpose. It’s very personal; very rewarding. It’s so beautiful to watch people bloom unto their joyous selves.
This includes designing their home and re-styling their hair and beauty regime, as well as editing their closets and realigning there wardrobes around their current goals. This is the JOY REVISION! It’s a whole new set of lenses to view your place in this world, as well to change how you are viewed. I know the recipe, because I basically was my own first client! About 7 years back I was known simply as Bethanie, “celebrity hairstylist” for over 2 decades!! I am since known to many as their Interior Designer, as well as their personal style strategist. I also am known as a Talkshow Host! It about new vision. It’s about what brings you joy. It’s about celebrating your individuality and specific life purpose in this world. There’s no 2 alike!
And, Let’s get honest- The title “THE JOY REVISION” is also a little about my love for rock n roll & dark wave music! Most things in my life have a rock ‘n’ roll nod in title… just as my daughter’s name is “Bowie “ my design company kind of sounds like “Joy Division.” Which is very me, of me! Hahaha! What can I say- I’m a rocker through & through! Cheeky rock n roll innuendoes set aside, it really is about partnering with my clients and creating a life that makes them truly happy and supporting them in becoming the version of themselves they want to see.
Bethanie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am most proud that my core mission has been to leave people better than I have found them. Whether that be with a much-needed hair appointment or a massive kitchen renovation and full home design. I always walk away knowing that I partnered with them on leveling up their life! True joy, peace and love doesn’t come from making thing’s beautiful or stylish. This is just a tool. Those things need to be found in spirit, but I can tell you that your spirit can’t even find itself if you’re living in chaos! Both our dwelling/working space and our physical appearance have a massive impact on our mental health and overall self esteem in identity. Lifestyling is a key part of wellness! It’s really hard to see yourself as a sought after successful business person. If your hair is a wreck, your clothes are ratty, outdated, unflattering and you’re living in a cluttered, dingy house with sheets for curtains. You know what I’m saying?! Not all clients have that extreme of circumstance when they find me, but there’s always room customize your life to the fullest. Till it overflows.
There’s immense joy to be found in investing in your day to day life. And- this joy is available to everyone. We must know that selfcare isn’t only for the elite. We can all take baby steps in the right direction towards how we wish for our personal style to develop and how we wish to live. Some of the raddest and most stylish people in history were dirt poor! Thank God for thrift stores! The environment thanks you too.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When we entered into a global pandemic, as a beauty professional with zero options of commerce, I had to pivot! Hairstyling has always been my bread & butter. To be forbidden to touch humans was a major blow to my income.
Luckily for me I knew exactly what I always wanted to do since young childhood. I wanted to design interiors. I took what schooling in this field I had & rolled it into more education. I opened my LLC within a month of quarantine. There was no time for dilly-dally. I’d waited my whole life for an opportunity of time to pursue my own design company… and boy, am I glad I did! I now have multiple businesses and am busier than I could have imagined. All things can work together for our good. I chose to see the silver lining of time as a golden ticket of opportunity!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I am still learning everyday! One valuable lesson that I continue grow in, is to unlearn what others have labeled you. We are multifaceted, wildly talented, superbly creative and interesting individuals. Everything that is in you is meant to be lived out in your lifetime and tomorrow isn’t promised! So, if you’re waiting on starting your dream career/hobby etc.. get goin! You are the author of your story. You leave your own legacy. You announce who you are to the world and the world offers you a dance to that tune. Make your own playlist. You deserve room to grow in a direction that thrills you.
The other lesson I have been learning/unlearning since young elementary school; is that only unique minds change the world. Own your individuality as a your superpower. The world will teach you early on to “ just fit in”! Be less of weird, wonderful self & be more of what everyone else is. This miserable mindset will keep you eternally small, stunted and unaccomplished in your field.
