Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beth Seaman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Beth, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve never been a girly girl. You’ll rarely find me in anything other than jeans and t-shirts, but I’ve always been obsessed with all things nail related. You won’t see me in public without my nails done. In the fall of 2019, I discovered the art of nail stamping. It’s a process wherein you use a rubber stamper to transfer detailed images from an etched metal plate to your nails. It took a while to perfect the process, but I loved every minute I spent learning.
Several months later, in 2020, when Covid forced all the nail salons to close temporarily, it occurred to me that I had a talent I could use to provide a product for people who weren’t able to get their nails done in a more traditional setting. Custom press on nails certainly weren’t a new concept at the time; it’s a bigger industry than people think and it’s grown in popularity in recent years. I just knew it was something I enjoyed doing and thought I could be successful with, so I dove in head first. Since we were all quarantined it was also something I could do to pass the time. It was scary to put myself and my art out there. What if I failed? What if no one wanted my nails? What if I wasn’t good enough? I think these are questions that all business owners ask themselves when they start out. It takes courage to put yourself and your ideas into the world not knowing what the end result will be.
I was excited when quarantine was over and I got the opportunity to sell my nails in person. I became a vendor at popular markets and events all over the Nashville area. I love talking to and meeting new people, and this avenue has given me a way to connect with people in my community. All the support and praise I’ve received has given me even more confidence in my skill and my products, and it’s so rewarding to hear positive reviews from my customers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I love all things nail related! I began my press on nail adventure during Covid when many salons were closed. I wanted to lend my talent to people who wanted to keep their nails looking fabulous when traditional services couldn’t be provided. I love what I do and I think it shows in my work.
When I’m not creating awesome nails, I’m probably reading. I got my degree in English, which is how LitChick Nails got its name.
I’m married to an amazingly supportive and generally awesome guy and have a teenage son whose humor knows no bounds. I have 3 cats who are adorable, but needy and kind of insane.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my college career as an English major because I wanted to become a high school English teacher. However, I was a nontraditional student. I was 26, married, had a toddler and was working at night in order to go to school during the day. I realized that I wanted to be home with my son for as long as I could while he was little, so my plans changed.
When I graduated, I pivoted into freelance editing and writing website content, blogs, and social media posts for a wide range of businesses. Because I love research and learning new things, I enjoyed the challenge of creating content for such a wide variety of businesses. Freelancing also gave me the opportunity to work on my own schedule and be home for my son, which saved us the expense of childcare. It was definitely a better situation for me and my family, and I think that, in the end, I was much better suited to that career.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m not sure it was a lesson so much as something that was ingrained in me as a teenager. My father used to tell me I wouldn’t ever amount to anything. I believed that for a long time. I spiraled into a long period of engaging in risky, self destructive behavior when I left home. After a few years, I decided it was time to prove him wrong. I realized that I was in charge of my life and what came out of it. I enrolled in college and graduated cum laude. It was the only time in my life he ever told me was proud of me before he passed away. Now I have an amazing husband who is my biggest supporter, a teenager who is intelligent and caring and hilarious, and I’m doing something that I love. I had to unlearn a long time ago that other people determine your worth.
