We were lucky to catch up with Beth Kines recently and have shared our conversation below.
Beth , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My son was in his last year of college and his car broke down and he was looking at all the options. He had been looking for cars for about 2 weeks and everything was overpriced during the pandemic. He went to go look at a car with the intention of bringing it home and they sold it shortly before he arrived. He was frustrated to say the least. Fortunately, my father had an extra car that allowed him to get from point A to B, which is all he needed. He didn’t want to commit to paying a car note so that’s when he started to do some research on ways to be able to get a new car and it not costing so much out of pocket. When Jordan came to me with the idea, I was all ears and I saw that he had a well-developed business plan that he was ready to execute. With technology advancing more and more each day electric cars are going to be the future. Whether the customer just wants to try an EV out for the first time, or they need to car for a vacation or business trip we figured we would hit a big audience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We offer a car rental service currently ran through Turo. Currently we just have EV vehicles on the fleet, but the plan is to eventually go private and get a couple different vehicles that would hit a larger audience. I think a great thing that separates us from Enterprise and Hertz is just how the overall experience is much easier and personal when dealing with us. You don’t have to worry about booking a car and when you get there to pick it up its not available and you also know exactly what you’re paying for. What separates us from the competition right now is that we have the best price and have gained almost 100 five-star trips since starting in April of last year. We strive to give the best customer service to ensure that the customer has a great trip and something to remember.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my cofounder/business partner on Friday, February 12, 1999 at 8:06p.m. He was 8 pounds 4.5 ounces and 21 inches long at the time. I gave birth to him. My cofounder/business partner is my son.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We put together the initial capital that we needed to start our business by me, my son and my mom each pitching in $7,000 for the downpayment on the car. We put down $21,000 on the car so that the payment would be manageable just in case this didn’t workout like we had planned.
