We were lucky to catch up with Beth Geddio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Beth, appreciate you joining us today. Often the greatest growth and the biggest wins come right after a defeat. Other times the failure serves as a lesson that’s helpful later in your journey. We’d appreciate if you could open up about a time you’ve failed.
Influencer Marketing – Or should I say, putting all of my hopes, dreams, and eggs in one basket? — I invested so much time and energy into going to events like the Emmy’s and Oscar’s pre awards gifting suites, in hopes to pair with celebrities and see sales come from their influence. I thought, for sure, it would be a success. Nope. not one sale. — happy to dive more into this story and details of this, if you’d like.

Beth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Beth Geddio is a faithfully fierce and fun female with a passion for helping anyone elevate their inner thoughts. Having her fair share of titles throughout her life, from architect to fitness instructor, to self-proclaimed personal development junkie, CEO, Chief Encouragement Officer of State of Being Co., is her proudest achievement.
I started this business during the pandemic with my own inner thoughts needed a boost. I started a daily practice of lighting candles while I could not leave my home, while I simultaneously struggled to keep the habit of saying daily affirmations to help my mindset. In one singular moment of lighting my candle, and simultaneiously realizing I forgot to say my affirmations, I wished my affirmation was on my candle so that I wouldn’t forget it. Through research of scent’s power to recall memories, and the ritual of lighting a candle, I realized that having an affirmation on a candle was the perfect way to elevate my thoughts with something that felt like a reward versus work.
I’m most proud that I’ve taken a common household object of a candle, and turned it into a wellness and mindset tool that utilizes all of our senses. The color of the label, the scent of the candle, the affirmations, and the daily act of lighting it all work together to take out thoughts into our bodies, and make them even more transformational.
I’ve taken this idea from creating my own scents as an e-commerce brand, to allowing people to create their own intentional scents during our candle making workshops at the State of Being candle store, located on South Street in Philadelphia. Including mindset education into a candle making workshop has proven to be a unique concept that allows me to impact people’s lives in a real way.
I’m excited that I get to take this passion for mindset transformation on the road and speak to people and companies about how scent can be a tool to improve their lives.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
State of Being is the side hustle that has has many forms as I matured and grew as a person outside of my full time job in the commercial design, corporate architecture space. Because it was a side hustle I was able to allow it to flex, change, evolve and grow while I paid my bills in the career that I thought I wanted as an 18 year old.
I thought I had really figured out my purpose in January of 2020 when I hosted my first in personal motivational event for women. But just a few weeks later, our world was put on hold, and so were my dreams of hosting in person events. It was only during that pause that I was able to begin pursuing an aspect of those events that I thought would simply be a part of it. “candles with positive words on them”. They would be sold at events as an additional income driver. In the midst of that pursuit is when I had my Ah Ha moment, and realized that these candles needed more than one word, and that these candles would be a transformational wellness product for people’s homes. I built this business and side hustle part time for 2 years. At the 2 year mark I was present with the opportunity to accept a layoff from my company that came with a few month severance. I knew it was my time to dive into this business full time and utilize the funds that I had built up from working in my career for the last decade. — A year and a half later, here I am, running an experiential retail store and online business full time.
