We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beth Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Beth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
I would say that my hero is my dad. He is a wonderful father and grandfather but also a savvy businessman who has led a successful commercial real estate family business for over forty years. I have learned so much from him. The biggest lessons are to act with integrity in all my dealings and to treat people how I would like to be treated. My dad is thoughtful and meticulous in all that he does. Whatever he sets out to do, he does it well; he takes care of his obligations and his family. He is generous and philanthropic, reminding us that we must share our good fortune with others. My dad is modest and enjoys communicating with people from all walks of life. He doesn’t act as if he is “above” anyone because he is the boss but, at the same time, he is decisive and leads when he needs to. I have tried to incorporate these lessons into my work and how I approach my clients, vendors and subcontractors.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Design and fashion have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I have always loved history, art, and architecture. I have memories of looking through my mother’s magazines and art books as a little girl. I also had an uncle (of blessed memory) who used to take me to visit art museums, galleries, and architectural landmarks (Biltmore House, Oakland Cemetery, etc.) as a kid. In college and graduate school, I pursued my love of history and was a teacher for several years. Upon having children, I gave up teaching. I always helped friends with styling and decorating their homes and one day a friend commented – “You know, you really could do this for a living.” So, on a whim, I decided to take an online interior design course. I then was able to get a job with a respected design firm here in town. I loved the creativity, the client interactions and I also loved that it allowed me to have a more flexible schedule so I could be a mom as well. I decided to form my own LLC and see where it took me. One friend hired me. And then another. As time passed, I was busy enough that I started Beth Brown Interiors full time and eventually hired a team to help me better serve my clients. I have been busy ever since and I am flattered that the referrals keep coming! In the design business, word of mouth is everything and it is so gratifying to have built a full-time business on my own. It is a lot of work but I love what I do!
My firm, Beth Brown Interiors, offers a personalized experience and strives to create unique, luxurious, and livable interiors. We believe that design should function to make life easier and that having a beautiful house enhances the quality of one’s life. Our projects reflect our clients’ vision and tastes, which we incorporate into a cohesive, timeless design. We enjoy using a variety of textures and materials to create interesting, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing spaces. From finish selections to the last accessory, Beth Brown Interiors combines a commitment to client satisfaction with a love of fashion and design. We can work with a variety of tastes and budgets and don’t go for one particular “look.” I genuinely love different eras and styles and it is fun to help clients fulfill their own vision. I also believe that BBI has a unique aesthetic within the Atlanta market. I am proud that I conduct my business with transparency and integrity.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have to say – social media is a challenge for me because I am constantly forgetting to take pictures during my day to day life and I do not like being in pictures; both are requirements for large followings. That said, it is essential for my business and the best way that I can showcase my work to a large audience. I use a scheduling program and plan my posts a couple of months at a time. At the beginning, I made the investment and had professional photos taken as soon as I had a few projects under my belt. I found it to be the best way to elevate my work and let it shine in its best light.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth and referrals of past clients and friends, as well as Instagram
