Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bessie LeeCappell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bessie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
My business began in July of 2019. It began as a solution to an issue I had as a mom with an infant. The solution is now called the Brush Bib- A protective barrier that goes around bottle brushes to prevent the user from being splashed on while washing baby bottles.
A friend of mine sent me using my new invention and stated that I should sell the product. After that, I began hand making the product and marketing it for sale. That Same year, I attend a baby expo and met a man who introduced me to his manufacturer. I agreed to work with his manufacturer and produce my invention in a professionally made version.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Bessie Lee-Cappell. Since my youth, I have been told that I’m “special.” I didn’t understand why until I created my first baby product, the Brush Bib. It was another example how throughout my life, I have beaten the odds. As one of seven siblings, I was the first to graduate high school, first to graduate college, first to matriculate from graduate school, and the only one to receive a license in my profession (mine is in social work from Temple University). I now work full time for the Department of Human Services for my native city, Philadelphia.
However, the most important thing to know about me is that I’m a mother of three children, ages 12, 9 and 3. As such, I developed my business and its unique products out of utter frustration — and it was a good thing! That frustration provided the drive that I continue to operate from daily.
As the founder, inventor, and owner of the Baby Bottle Brush Bib Company, I was determined to be a game changer for the baby product industry. Not only do I want to help other frustrated parents, but I also want to partner with like-minded entrepreneurs. So feel free to reach out. I’m here to help others, as well as see what others are willing to do for my business. Having me and my products on your team, means having a winner who readily accepts beating the odds as my mission.
All of our designs reflect neutral colors to appeal to both moms and dads. They are durable, easy to use and clean, and small enough to hide away when not in use. Of course, parental supervision is recommended for all baby products for children under the age of 5. The Brush Bib is a protective silicone barrier that goes around the Bottle Brushes to prevent the dreaded “splash back.”
The Pacifier Teether Clip is FDA-approved, BPA-free, and eco-friendly. It grows with baby to toddlerhood on four levels, doubles as a teether, and is made of 100% silicone to reduce bacteria and thrush. It also has the unique option of allowing the suspender clips to be changed.
Our Elephant Suspender Clips are also FDA-approved, BPA-free and double as teethers, That means a having a welcome end to unsightly, chipped and bite-marked teething accessories. The goal of my products is to make parenting easier.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I began my career as a social worker. I worked for the city of Philadelphia helping children and their families for 10 years. Over a year ago, I began my journey as a fulltime business owner . I decided that I found more joy in inventing products that made babies and parents happy.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During this journey, I’ve struggled. I’ve struggled financially and emotionally. However each day I chose to focus on the end goal. Keeping the end goal in mind is my daily motivator!
