We recently connected with Besi Zeka and have shared our conversation below.
Besi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
The most important thing is to do what you love.nIf you want success choose what you love doing and find your inner voice.
I have worked in the film industry for more than 10 years and it was an amazing journey of course it was hard but I never stopped. The one thing I love about what I do is that I can travel and do the work, all I need is my laptop and good wifi. In the beginning, it was hard and I worked on many projects for free to get out there but it was worth it because I made connections and my work was exposed out there.
Now, I work in the industry as a VFX Artist and teach Visual Effects but soon I am launching the new training “VFX and Travel”. I want to teach people how you can travel and do VFX, basically do what you love.
I worked in many Hollywood films and commercials since 2011. One thing that really helped me was connections. In this industry, we say “It is not what you have but who do you know”.
And if I did it, you can do it, too. Just don’t quit.
So, the first shot was helping my teacher in a big movie and I made some connections and after a while used them. As I said also I worked for free on some projects to get connections and to have my reel. I just practiced a lot and took so many training online even though I graduated from a very professional school in Hollywood, I had to take training because I had to be updated all the time. All you need is an amazing reel and go online to find jobs, I know it’s not that easy but you can’t stop. Keep going!

Besi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an award-winning visual effects artist who contributes to feature films, music videos, and commercials and I am based in Hollywood, California. I have a degree in Visual Effects graduating from The Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood.
It all started with my passion since I was young and I went to Hollywood to study Visual Effects. And right away after graduation I got the chance to work on car commercial and that was the moment where I got exposed to this industry.
I always made connections through my teachers and I took lessons from them. By the time I graduated I started writing them.
It is hard to get in this industry but once you are inn, that’s it. Just make sure you work hard because the competition is huge.
I got the chance to work in big film projects from Transformers 4 all the way to Marvel’s movies, and commercials but I thing what I always wanted to do is teach VFX to others.
Here I leave the imdb link for you: www.imdb.me/besizeka
So, always I had the idea to open a school or academy. Not just teach VFX but tell them how they can live and travel by doing VFX.
How you can do that??? Well, freelancer and remote jobs. So, if you want to be independent artist, I am here. Here is my IG in case you need it, Ig user: bzofficial
Basically, I worked in movies as VFX Supervisor and I produce art and make the movie happen in post production. Some projects may last for years and some are quick but It is very fun, like so fun. You get to do amazing work, you meet amazing artists/people and your name will be screened in theatres; how cool is that.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Back in the day when I was a student, it wasn’t so many resources like these days. Nowadays, there are tons of websites and resources that make life easier and I wish I was a student in this era. It is so many websites and tutorials that offer amazing courses for visual effects or 3d or anything and this was missing before. Now it depends on the student or artist if he/she wants to get in deep in the learning. I do not want to mention any website in particular but you can find lots of them. One thing I didn’t know is that you do not need to go for a degree to get into this industry, honestly what you can do is take training and go find an internship and there is the place where you become a pro. After graduation I started to work in a small studio and trust me it was completely different from what I learned in school, everything from techniques to pipelines. Go to university if you want to become a teacher but remember education is number one no matter what. Education leads you to the right path and to the right people but in most cases, training is the right one to become a professional.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is a very good feeling that no one believes or understands if he/she is not, very difficult for those who do not understand and who are not in this field .As an artist’s soul, you see the world and everything differently, you see the world with sensitivity and creativity. If we talk about art or artists, I must say that always in history the artist has been the one who changed the world and took the courage to change something for the world’s history by demonstrating it in public to the people for awareness through photography, drawing, film, etc.
I, as a visual effects artist, in addition to creativity, I have benefited from meeting very successful and positive people who have changed the world and who give you a very positive feeling and push you to move forward. As a VFX artist, from working in a studio to a freelance artist, I have gained the freedom to be able to travel anywhere in the world and work, and this is something very beautiful because I have freedom, normally that has been earned by a period and let’s not forget professionalism. The other rewards you get being an artist in this industry are the prizes you win at the festival and the contacts you make that remain good memories for the rest of your life because with contacts you find work and create new friendships and ideas. Believe in yourself and never quit.
