We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beryl Anthony Brackett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Beryl Anthony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Becoming an author was never part of the plan for my life. I didn’t wake up and think, “I want to be a writer.” It was something that happened.
Growing up, I was a dreamer and a doodler. I didn’t like to read. I had a slight fascination with writing. I would create stories in my mind and write them down and turn in the assignments for my English class. That didn’t go over so well because I never followed directions for the assignments.
It was when I became an adult and had issues I wanted to get off my chest; I journaled. I realized I could write things down in a place no one else could read but me. No one could tell me how to write, what to say, or how I should feel. It was just me, pen and paper, and my thoughts. Journaling was therapeutic.
After journaling for years, I noticed my journaling had turned into a book. Becoming an author was a tough decision for me. This would mean if people liked my book they would buy it and it would no longer be me, my thoughts and pen and paper. I would share my thoughts, emotions, and my creation with the world. It was scary. However, I’m glad I took the leap and I have written three novels, three children’s books, and created two journals.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Beryl Anthony Brackett. As an author, I provide readers with an experience through the written word that will uplift and encourage them in their life’s journey. My writing entertains, educates, and connects with readers on an emotional level and a personal level, which gives them room for growth. As readers turn each page and get emerged in the stories that I write, they get a glimpse into different worlds and discover they can relate to it.
I am most proud of having a positive impact on others. Knowing that my stories are relevant to what they are going through and it helps them get through their situation is very fulfilling. Creating something meaningful and enduring through writing brings personal satisfaction.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission as a writer is to share my thoughts and emotions. It is also my goal to entertain, inform or inspire my readers. For example, my latest novel, “Shadows of Strength” brings awareness to women who are going through breast cancer and dealing with the effects of chemo. I wrote this book because I am a breast cancer survivor. Although this story is fiction, it is very relatable. Creating a community through stories and experiences is powerful..
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspects of being a writer is connecting with readers. When I connect with readers by using pen and paper my words have power and it resonates with readers on a personal level. Building a relationship with readers and receiving their feedback about how they can relate to a character is very rewarding. I’ve learned that my journey is not for me. It’s for others so that I can encourage and let them know they can succeed or overcome any obstacle they may face.
