We were lucky to catch up with Bertha Robles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bertha, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The Makeup path chose me, I didn’t chose it. I was never a girly girl growing up and makeup was something I never thought I would be into. Until one day my friend did my makeup and my reaction was realizing I truly didn’t know how beautiful I could be until I had makeup on. It activated my desire to bring that same feeling I felt, to everyone else. That is the goal for my clientele still til this day. That feeling and moment is when I first knew I wanted to be a makeup artist.
Bertha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Makeup found its way to me. I didn’t even believe I would be interested because I thought makeup was just for fun, I never thought it would be my career-path. I worked at Mac for 5 years and that really opened up the gateway to my creativity and diversify my artistry for clientele.
My services are a wide range from bridal and special occasions makeup to editorial and creative looks makeup. Whether it’s a full GLAM or natural radiant everyday look, my artistry will bring out the best version of each client. I believe makeup is than just makeup, it is a powerful tool that can instill confidence and empower people to embrace their true selves.
One of the problems I help solve for my clients is bridging the gap of personal style and my professional expertise. I understand that each client will have unique features, skin tones and wants for their look, which is why I work closely with my clients to understand their needs.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding is creating the vision from scratch and watching it come to life. Whether it’s a clients’ special day, a photo shoot, or a commercial, everyone’s face is different, therefore coming up with a look while still aligning with their personalities becomes a fun challenge. I love to help people see what I see, that they were unable to see before.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Coming from a place where the makeup world was so different in 2015, it was and still has been a learning curve navigating social media in the beauty world. I really built my community with engaging with my followers and making the content relevant, fun and educational. I wad also able to build the clientele that I want because of my social media accounts.
My advice would be to keep putting yourself out there. Sometimes being uncomfortable can be challenging but also very rewarding. You’ll never know what can come out of it or who will see it. And also believing in yourself because if you can’t believe in you, other wonts. Don’t be afraid of your goals and visions and knowing what you bring to to table with experience and knowledge. Sometimes you might not be the right artist for certain projects but only because the right ones are coming your way soon.
