We recently connected with Bert Cornielius and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I am a 2nd generation performer. My family is the world renown Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose who rose to fame in the mid to late 70’s. Theyre hits Treat Her Like A Lady and Too Late To Turn Back Now topped the billboard charts for decades after, including being on the Oscar award winning Blackklansman sound track. My dad is personally one of the best singers I’ve ever heard carry a tune. From the age of 4 I was groomed for show business. I won my first talent show at 5 years old. I’ve been singing most my life but about 8 years ago I was presented with an opportunity to do stand up comedy at an event. I never tried it before but my wife believed in me enough to pushed me to give it a shot. I did and it was amazing, Ive been hooked on performing stand up ever since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Some would say Bert Cornielius decided to explore his full potential later than most. At 32 years old Bert decided to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. This decision came after trying out for a sketch comedy show in his native home of South Florida. As fate would have it a comedian was unavailable, and Bert was asked to warm up the crowd for a major headliner. The result was the birth of a new adventure, career and love of the art of comedy from that point on. Bert’s wit, charm and his ability to connect with any crowd pairs nicely with his stories of love, marriage and his multicultural upbringing in South Florida. He’s opened for major headliners and entertainers including Marvin Dixon, Freddie McGregor, Amara Lanegra, Will E, Pierre(How To Be a Player) Malik S(Black-ish), Razor, Light Skinned Keisha, Mark Viera, Chris Williams and Hip Hop superstar Trina.. Bert is best described as a multi-talented singer, actor, stand-up comedian, and host. Dubbed Mr. Show, Bert has been considered a multi-faceted powerhouse. Coming from a pioneering musical family (Cornelius Brothers& Sister Rose) who broke through the billboard charts during the highlights of their careers in the 60’s and 70s. Bert can currently be seen in the new movie Band Culture as Colin streaming maslife36.com and on most major platforms. Priding himself on the theory of laughter being universal, Bert is poised to grace more stages in the years to come. Continue to keep an eye on this upcoming comedian as he continues to develop his personal greatness.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Comedy is an uphill battle. I’ve been performing standup for 8 years and there’s always challenges. You can be the funniest person and not see any stage time, you could also be the most unfunniest person and have more stage time than you can deal with. Its not an exact science but more or less a combination of talent, drive, and connections. There’s also being able to keep a steady social media base as well that can either help or hinder your career. What makes me so resilient in this business is my style of comedy is adaptable. Dirty(Blue), Urban, Clean, Professional, Skits, Improv, and hosting are my solid skill sets I’ve developed in my comedy career and throughout the year i’ve worked in venues as small as 30-40 people to as large as a few thousands in attendance. I am not a quitter by any means and pride myself on my persistency and integrity.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal honestly is to touch lives and make great money doing something I love day in and day out. My drive is the ability to take care of my family doing something I love. I want the ability to say I didn’t work a day this week because I was doing something I love. As long as I can tell a story and make people laugh I’ll never walk away from it.
