Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bernice Isley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Bernice thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
I typically bring some type of gift to my newborn session clients. I have been a new mom 3 times so I know how helpful little things can be. Typically it’s a gift card for dinner because we all know it’s impossible for a new mother to be able to provide a meal for her family. Even better, if they have a meal train, I sign up to bring a meal! Clients always love that, it’s such a huge help to them even though it’s something so simple.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Bernice Isley, 38 year old newborn photographer in Raleigh, North Carolina. I grew up with next to no photos from my childhood being taken. We never took family photos, it just wasn’t something our family could afford. In high school I was gifted a camera and decided that I would be the one to document the memories! I have 3 kids and they are photographed daily, and they are probably sick of me (in a loving way of course) No special occasion or sweet memory goes undocumented. I offer family centered sessions which include maternity, newborn, cake smash and family sessions. I help with styling and props in the case of newborn or smash cake sessions. I am with you from the initial inquiry and all the way to gallery delivery. Once the session is over, I offer fully edited digitals or prints. And hopefully make a lifelong friend in the process.
I think what sets me apart from most newborn photographer is that I offer in home sessions. For this I bring the studio experience to the home of new mothers. This way they don’t have to worry with the stress of getting themselves, siblings and their new baby out the door and to an appointment at the studio. They have everything they need in the comforts of home. For those who are still okay with traveling, the studio is still an option for them. And I have the essentials located in my studio just in case sleep deprived parents end up leaving something behind at home.
I am most proud that clients trust me with their memories and MOST importantly the safety of their little ones. I am trained in safely handling newborns and posing them properly for those precious sleepy photos.
The main thing I would want potential clients/followers/fans to know is that I take pride in the photographic moments and memories that I create in our sessions. I want you to be able to look back years down the road and immediately be taken back to that moment in time. I always strive to provide the best experiences to my clients. I want these photographs to be cherished through generations.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me personally, the most rewarding aspect is seeing my finished work and delivering it to happy clients. Getting those email replies about how happy they are with the photographs is THE most rewarding thing.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Word of mouth. It was and still is THE best form of getting the word out about you and your reputation. When people love your work and how you treat your clients, they will never hesitate to recommend you to everyone. When other people trust you, they have heavy influence on friends, family and even strangers.
