We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bernadette Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bernadette, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When big things that seem unmanageable and even devastating happen in our lives, many of us choose one of two ways. We shrink back and stay small and weather the storm alone, or we open to the experience try to make sense of our circumstances, and allow the world in to support us, understand us and help us grow. The risk I took was sharing my story.
I had a Spiritual Awakening, not a small awakening but one that has led me to communicate with my ancestors and guides. It happened during the time when my husband came to me and told me he was struggling with Alcoholism. I knew in that moment that our lives had changed. He had been hiding his illness. The next four and a half years were filled with uncertainty, trauma, and chaos, with a little bit of hope sprinkled within. He lost his battle and passed away leaving wake of broken dream and financial ruin.
It is times like this, we often turn to prayer and that is what I did. I prayed to whoever could hear me to help me, help him, anything to ease the pain. My Ancestors stepped in. First, it was a dream, a visitation where my great aunt who had passed came to me to tell me “ We hear your prayers.” That was followed by a Great-great grandmother who channeled through me in an Irish brogue to say the prayers with me. Their love and guidance came through and although David lost his battle they were with me during that time.
It was their intervention, that led me to create my company Tell Me Our Story, Ancestral Healing. Where I am able to share my story with the world but also use the intuitive gifts of Spirit communication that have opened in me so that I can bring Healing and understanding to others.

Bernadette, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Experiencing Grief and Trauma in our lifetimes is something we all share. Understanding and working through brings us healing. We all need help as we take the journey.
I work with people struggling with the effects of grief and trauma, who want to explore new ways of healing. It is through Ancestral Healing, and understanding what may have been passed down, that gives them the power and the tools to help them move forward.
I help clients understand that we are all spiritual beings and there are many ways to communicate with our loved ones in Spirit. We are each on a unique path and experience communication differently so I help them understand what they have been seeing, feeling, and sensing is real and how to open up further. I use my intuitive gifts of Spirit communication to help them not only experience healing but how to open to their gifts.
I have 20 years of experience and training in grief and trauma, working with both young and old, guiding them through some of life’s most difficult transitions. I am certified as an End of Life Doula
I am a trained as a genealogist, allow me to discover the stories and documents of ancestors that give clues to the struggles and triumphs of their lives.
As they work with me, my clients experience a deeper understanding of themselves, and a way to release some of the pain they may have been carrying, opening them up to the comfort of being able to continue a relationship with those who have crossed over.
It was was my path through grief, and the loss of my husband to Alcoholism, that brought clarity and focus to my work, and where my ancestors opened the door for my spiritual awakening and path to healing.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I love this question about resilience! It is such a part of the Ancestral Healing journey. According to the dictionary, resilience is (1) the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness! (2) the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.
From the moment my husband shared that he was struggling with Alcoholism I had to be resilient. I didn’t know or understand that but it was what I had to do. Either that, or collapse in a puddle. Resilience is in each of us. It is part of our survival instinct. Whether you are working through a personal tragedy or working to keep your business alive (I’ve been through both), it is our ability to recover quickly that insures our success.
Resilience is something that can be passed down to you from your ancestors. As I did my own family research I discovered a story of incredible loss and poverty for one family. It was their story of recovery and resilience that I was born into and their resilience that I used as I understood my path of moving forward. I was able to have Spirit communication with them and this truly helped me feel their resilience and this is something that can help all of us move forward when you realize it is possible.
I knew from the moment my husband passed that my life was taking me in a different direction whether I wanted it or not. I also know now that it was all of my training and background along with my ability to bounce back, that allowed me to create my company Tell Me Our Story, Ancestral healing know it would succeed.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Another great question!
Being able to share my story with potential clients, networking partners and in Social media, is the way I have built my reputation. My experience changed my life and when others hear it, they connect and want to learn more.
My experience and training in grief and trauma, working with both young and old, also help people understand my ability to hold the space for emotions that can come up when I work with clients who have also had difficult life situations. Also opening to and sharing my Spiritual gift of Spirit communication, allows me to offer Healing reading/sessions which brings the healing home for many people and help them open to it too.
Overall, storytelling is a powerful way to teach. It gives people and understanding of the concept and allows them to see a story of their own. It makes it easy for potential clients to understand more fully what they will be receiving and what their experience may be when we work together.
