We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Berkley Mcdowald. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Berkley below.
Berkley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
So I got into the field mostly trying to find a direction to be able to help my mom after she had a severe stroke back when I was 17. I searched all through the internet for any answer to help her release her tension and pain on a consistent level. I found massage therapy and started to learn that there was alot more than just helping people relax and that it was for the luxury life. Once I started learning medical tricks and tools I started implementing it on my mother to help her and she started to receive nerve signals inside the arm that was once paralyzed. I told myself that’s a start and continue to treat her throughout school and then started to see a huge difference in her performance her overall mood and less nerve pain from the left side gaining atrophy
Berkley, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello everyone. I have been practicing for over 7 years now as a massage therapist. I learned from the Florida college of natural health which is now called cortiva institute but if you ask me I loved the old program way better. I learned under some of the top therapist in the city that have traveled and made it their life and wanted to give they knowledge back to the next crop. From there I then began my work in the medical side of the field working for a few chiropractors and medical offices. I decided I wanted to learn the spa world be able to bring healing and bodywork all I the same breathe so spend time at hand and stone, massage envy, and a few other spas locally in the Orlando area. It prompted me to want to go into business for myself and be able to provide mobile massage services in the surrounding areas where I can create my own lane of healing and access to more clients in their comfort zone.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn that massage was not just for the luxury that everyone needed to be doing this. Learned so much about the spas that now we have completely transitioned to medical and are received better by medical professionals as well.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe mostly just caring about the client. Taking the time during my initial intake to get to know my clients on a one on one bases and understanding their wants and needs. Once I place my hands on them I can feel the tension release so much better because I have gained trust from my clients throughout the years
