We were lucky to catch up with Beoncia Dunn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Beoncia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
All of my projects are meaningful, but if I had to choose one that still has major impact on Me it would be a project I did back in 2021 – 2022 with my Art Sister Chelsey B Davis & my Brother Chad Lupoe called MINOR ALTERATIONS. It was a Love Letter dedicated to my Mom & Aunts highlighting their personal style and how they have shaped me into the Woman that I am today. Each look is dedicated to an Aunt & my Mom and a visual interpretation of how I was inspired by their stylistic approach to Life. Their fashion & unique personalities still resonates with Me until this day. It took me half a year to produce it, from casting the right model, to showroom pulls, to purchasing extra garments & shoes to complete the looks, to shooting it from day to night, and creating a 11 X 17 Zine to complete the project. This project was very expensive, but I wanted everyone involved to have a piece of the project that they could keep forever; something that will live past Us.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Wardrobe Stylist, Visual Artist & Creative Director from Atlanta, Georgia. I love to curate art that makes you feel. However, what you feel from my work is up to your own interpretation.
My personal experiences have been a bold mix of both African American & West Indian Culture that deeply impacts my StoryTelling. I am who I am because of My Mother, a Southern Woman & Style Icon who nurtured me straight out of the womb, and My Father, a hardworking Immigrant from Trinidad & Multi Hyphenated Creative.
My passion lies in constantly exploring unconventional ways to create art and tell unique stories through different mediums. My purpose is to utilize my gifts to create art that has the power to impact the world through love & enlightenment. I am a vessel. As an artist, my work is meant to uplift and impact my people to continue to press forward & upward. It is important that we continue to create art with the intention to uplift & inspire because some people may need the message from our work more than we do. Whether they see our work in the same way that we intend for it to be perceived or if they view our work in a completely different way.
Lastly, It is imperative to Be Present! Life got REAL when I recently lost my GrandMother, my little brother Tyrese & a few of my friends that were my age. Some of them I didn’t even get to hug & spend time with before they transitioned from this realm. Felt like I was mourning the death of my Dad back in 2006 all over again & again. Loosing my loved ones gave me so much clarity. We must understand that we are all living to fulfill the assignments individually given to Us while we are on this Earth. When you become spiritually conscious of what actually matters in this Life then you will begin to see everything & everyone clearly with new eyes. It’ll help you on your journey of understanding your purpose for living. No matter how long or hard the journey, what is meant for You will always find You.
“Let The Arts Move You” — Beoncia Dunn
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am an Artist that grateful to have this gift through & through. I may not be as famous or popular as some of the top Artists of this time, but I’m grateful that I have been able to touch a few people with my Art due to sharing it via Social Media & my Website.
It’s been a beautiful journey so far, but I am ready to expand and make my Brand & Art a HouseHold Name. Not because of fame, but I am ready fulfill my assignments on this Earth as an Artist on a Global Scale. As an Artist, I am speaking my own language that I want people to tap into. I am want to continue to make Art that uplifts, heals, restores & touches individuals on a spiritual level.
I am working hard to make sure people can experience my work in-person all over the world. I want them to experience that divine energy that I experience when creating projects and how it stays with each project no matter how far it travels. I want that experience to be felt in any medium from prints in a home, prints at one of my Art shows, a billboard, a mural, a digital feature, a publication feature, a post card, a coffee mug; anywhere that my Art will exist.
