We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Benny Gold a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Benny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I launched Lawyer Stories on Instagram July 2017 as a passion project because I believe all lawyers have a story. As a licensed attorney (CT | ME | MA) when I talk to other lawyers, I often find myself not asking them about their cases, but rather asking about their inspirations and motivations along the way to becoming attorneys, and challenges they have encountered along their journey to the legal profession. My idea was to create an Instagram gallery of attorneys (and law students) and recount their stories in the form of a narrative, submitted personally by them. I started with five lawyers that I was friendly with and posted a story almost daily. I received direct messages from other lawyers wanting to share their journey, and I reached out to some as well. Eventually, the Lawyer Stories Instagram page evolved into a group of diverse individuals connecting and sharing their stories on a social media platform that has developed into an inspiring global community. Legal professionals were connecting with each other in the comment section of the Instagram “Features,” and connecting amongst themselves. I still receive lawyer stories and have featured over approximately 2500 lawyers around the globe. When the lawyers and law students write their story and submit to me, I learn about their lives and have thus created friendships and connections with hundreds of these contributors because my interest in their story is genuine and authentic. We then launched the Facebook and LinkedIn Lawyer Stories pages. Personally connecting with legal professionals from around the country and world has been an uplifting and motivating experience. Legal Professionals from all over the world read Lawyer Stories and you never know who is being inspired by a single one. Since I had connected with a good amount of lawyers in South Florida we decided to hold our first event in January of 2020. The next month, I launched The Lawyer Stories Podcast with Benny Gold and have since released over 200 episodes with guests such as Gloria Allred, Ben Crump, Alan Dershowitz, Marcia Clark, Nancy Grace, Lisa Bloom and other fantastic attorneys. I never knew how much I would enjoy hosting a podcast and assisting someone to share their journey to practice of law. In addition, it is my pleasure to enable warm connections between Lawyer Stories members that take part in our community. Lawyer Stories now has a brand new website, Thelawyerstories.com, courtesy of Law Firm Sites, complete with our podcast episodes, blog and members of Lawyer Stories Connect, our membership community that was launched in October 2024. We have held events in Miami, New York City, and Boston where our community of lawyers, law students, and partners that support the legal profession can network, share their stories, and connect.

Benny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Lawyer Stories is unique in that it started as a passion project. I wanted to read about other lawyers’ journeys to the practice of law. I started on Instagram with five lawyers I knew, and told them I needed a photo along with a few paragraphs.
After that, I started sending messages to a few larger accounts on Instagram and accounts/legal professionals I noticed who were engaging with the posts. I asked them if they wanted to be featured, and from there it kept building. I also received messages from lawyers and legal professionals who wanted to share their stories as well. For post #50, I shared my personal journey. During this time I was trying to use hashtags and engage with other legal-related Instagram accounts as well. Engaging by treating other posts’ comment sections as a cocktail party – writing a short comment or even just liking post so others would get curious about Lawyer Stories. All organic engagement!
When just starting out, consistency is key. You need to post everyday, and even sometimes 2-3 posts per day. I believe many people have different theories about what works. Create a hook that will draw in your reader. Know your audience and platform (i.e. a LinkedIn post will sometimes look different than a Facebook post). Just keep going and execute.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Sharing my personal story and being my authentic and genuine self. Many times you see people on social media boasting about things and trying to get attention – after all, that is what social media can be about.
I use social media as a vehicle to connect with like-minded people (and to connect them with each other) and as a result I have met some good friends from other places with
I truly care about the community and try to message or ask Lawyer Stories friends about things that have happened in their lives, rather than just click the like button. My ultimate goal is to strengthen attorneys’ professions and lives by shedding a human light on it.
