We were lucky to catch up with Bennett Louis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bennett thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
For the most part, I feel that people that aren’t pursuing music as a career most normally assume that it’s just doing a craft well enough for long enough and landing a good job within your realm of work. And they are right in some instances. However, more of them than not, it is the creatives that have the networking capabilities and utilize other forms of strategy and marketing in order to further their careers. There have been times where I was the least deserving of an opportunity in the room compared to my musical counterparts, yet still received the job or honor due to just talent alone. The same can be said for the opposite and it’s actually very common that an under qualified individual will book a job or position simply because their strategy was superior to the competition. Music is business first if you are looking through the lens of career. If you have the whole package, expect to be going places. (I am also jealous of you.)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I haven’t played many live shows in my time as a singer/songwriter however, because I practice my vocals daily and am rehearsed fully for studio work. I am proficient and work well with seasoned musicians that have been either producing or playing live shows for many years. This is something that I take enormous pride in and one of my favorite qualities of mine that I possess professionally.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is,100%, being told by a listener that your music resonates or has impacted them significantly. In fact, that’s almost one of the most important rewards that come from being an artist.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
SHOW UP. Show up when the song drops. Engage with it and post it on your socials so more people can hear it. Show up to shows. What else are you doing on a Tuesday night? It costs 15 dollars and you’re supporting your friend’s biggest aspiration. Show up when music is being promoted. Engage on social media and algorithmically. Pre-Saving is HUGE for independent artists. It truly throws their music into some career altering positions at times. Just SHOW UP. It means more to your artist friend than you will ever know.
