We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Benjamin Mcmillan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Benjamin below.
Benjamin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
Start with the concept. We can train the job but we can’t train a personality. Too many times companies want work history, ethnicity, background check, etc. At Rubber City Reuse we throw all of that out the window and have found it does nothing more than waste our time and resources. Our interview consists of us asking ourselves the question “what did the candidate do to find and reach us and how did they do it”. We want the individual who comes knocking on the door looking for work.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up outside of Cleveland and moved to LA after high school. I was originally a chef in Los Angeles and trained for years to work in the hospitality industry. I wanted to do something new yet impactful and also something that was a growing segment of industry. I began noticing I was able to divert most all of my kitchen’s waste from a landfill except the food scraps. That’s when the idea hit me “why don’t I recycle food scraps” fast forward and Rubber City Reuse was born. We are now only 1 of 3 companies in Ohio doing what is now called “organics recycling” and the rest is history.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We started our business focusing on serving corporate cafeterias. This was in February 2020. In a matter of months our business model was shot and unsustainable. We pivoted to meeting folks in their homes with smaller collection methods and in turn launched a new residential division which to this day is a major driver of growth.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We have spent money on radio adds, print adds, social media, door hangars, and countless brochures. The ONLY marketing method we have seen a return from is yard signs believe it or not. We can spend a couple thousand on yard signs. Place them by highway off ramps and roundabouts and make that money back in a matter of months.
