We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Benjamin Alexander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Benjamin below.
Benjamin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My modeling career started out as an “accident” of sorts. One of my closest friends invited me to accompany him in landscape photography in the Houston area. He took a couple of test shots on me and suggested that I start getting in front of the camera more often. From there, he invited me to join him in going to an Instagram meetup (an event where different creatives from all over gather to collaborate) where I was able to meet and network with different people from across the city. At this point I was able to work one on one with different photographers in order to build my portfolio and get signed to a local modeling agency. One thing I would’ve done differently would probably be to not rush the process and enjoy the journey. I got so caught up in chasing the bigger agencies and brands that whenever I wasn’t accepted by them, I quit being a creative altogether out of frustration for a whole two years. In 2023, I was able to find my spark again and started enjoying what I do, regardless of whether I was accepted or not.
Benjamin , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My style is more so Dapper/European fashion mixed with a bit of fitness. Photographers usually book me for my physique or certain concepts they’d like to execute, whether it be loungewear or high fashion. I think my charisma and energy in the studio sets me apart from other models. I always like to be in a fun environment so I want to help contribute to that. I think what I’m most proud of is how comfortable I’ve gotten in front of the camera. I try to make it easy on the photographer by just being myself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative, in my opinion, is the feeling of loving what you do. Once you get to the point where it doesn’t feel like work and you’re having fun, it can change your perspective on everything pertaining to your field.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think what most people can do to create a better creative ecosystem is to give the little guys a chance. So many people get caught up in how many views/followers the person they’re collaborating with has, that they forget to appreciate how much hard work and dedication that each individual person puts into their craft.
