We recently connected with Benaiah Poindexter and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Benaiah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
When we first opened our doors we were renting a suite from a well known plastic surgeon daily. Within six months we moved into our own 80 sq foot suite. Within two years we moved in our own commercial space which was 1,500 square feet. Within four years we moved into a larger commercial space which was 7,000 square feet. Our success is a direct correlation to our commitment to our work ethic, a strong energy dynamic, and cultivated customer service skills. We scaled up by being willing to be the first one in, and the last one to leave. I was dedicated to putting the business first, and creating a consistent work ethic which helped me stay focused, driven, and grounded in my mission. We focused on our marketing budgets, close rates, and keep pushing forward despite the heavy days, setbacks, financial highs and lows, and balanced work to home life dynamics. When you are building your dream, you truly need people around you who won’t quit.
Benaiah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Benaiah Poindexter, and I own Scalp Prodigy LLC. We opened in 2016 and have since then opened three locations in NV, CA, and MD. My mentor Daniel Yerenberg who has since passed introduced me to the Scalp Micropigmentation industry, and told me I would be a natural. Once he gave me the confidence to step forward and bet on myself, I never looked back. We solve our client’s hair loss problems, and offer them newfound confidence through our treatments. We set ourselves apart from our colleagues, because we focus on the client first over profit. We are most proud of our combined partnership with Vanguard SMP located in Orlando and Bonita Spring, FL for Scalp Micropigmentation training. We want our followers to know that we are dedicated to our craft, and look forward to expanding with intention.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
There have been plenty of instances where we were tight financially over the year, but if I had to choose one specific timeline where it was almost unbearable, it would be when I started build out on two locations at the same time. I 100% do not recommend anyone do this if they want to maintain their sanity. We went way over budget, applied for loans to our eyeballs, and had nearly zero work life balance. It all ended up working out for the best over time, but if I had to do it again I would definitely do one thing at a time, and try to find balance in my life before pursuing growth.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele is through the use of social media marketing. I would suggest to test everything, and then only move forward with what works the best once you focus on the ROI. On average, I always like to get a minimum 2X return on anything I invest in. Once a steady stream of clientele is coming in, I streamline the process and scale up.
