We were lucky to catch up with Ben Mosser recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ben thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I wondered wether I was capable of starting and running a tattoo studio of my own for years. It was a huge financial risk to take the leap into working for myself, but it’s paid off well. I’m thankful to be able to work for myself and be free of toxic work environments and bosses. I enjoy being in control of my work life and would be in a much less fortunate position had I not taken that initial risk.
Ben, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been drawing and creating art for most of my life. My dad was a good artist and we’d sit at the table and draw our own comics while reading the funnies in the paper. Throughout school, I continued exploring artistically.
Eventually, I learned the art of tattooing after leaving a mundane design position. I wish I had learned the craft sooner, as it has been the most challenging and rewarding medium I’ve worked with.
When I started my own little studio, I did so to create a calm and friendly environment for my clients, as well as myself. Many tattoo shops are loud and abrasive in my opinion. A relaxed atmosphere goes a long way toward a positive experience, which is always the goal and standard.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s are pretty cool as long as they’re looked at realistically and not something to get rich off of.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Respect the value of work and time put forth by artists who make a living from their creative work. Quality art takes time and artists should be compensated accordingly.
