Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ben Morrison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ben, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
My best investment was undoubtedly beginning my production company Superfunny Inc. After 20 years in the business, I had enough of waiting around for other people projects to come my way and decided to just become other people.
Since its inception I’ve produced, written, directed and even been able to act in a host of branded commercial campaigns, as well as co-directing and producing a feature-length mixed media stand-up special to name a few. I never lack for work, both in terms of income but my own expression.
And the best part of this investment, I now spend zero time wishing someone else would pick me, and lots of time picking others. I’ve been able to employ over 60 creatives, friends and collaborators.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am at my heart, a performer. I’ve been acting since I was 6 years old, and took this obsession to NYU’s TISCH School of the Arts where I graduated with a BFA in 2001… Months before 9/11 when all the acting work left New York for years to come.
That’s where stand-up came in. One thing the city definitely needed was a laugh so I took it as a sign to take the hobby of telling jokes on stage and make it a career, and make it a career I did.
Now 20 some odd years later I still perform stand-up all the time and have chiseled out a nice little online following with my comedy clips (which I also edit myself because, production company).
And speaking of production company, I have one, Superfunny Inc. my full-service creative, branded and production house based in Los Angeles. I make movies. I make commercials, but I want the headline to read: I make. You have to stay productive in this game and having my own production company means I’m always as productive as I want to be.
I’m like a shark, if I don’t keep moving I stop being funny.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
This is a good one as I have done just this. And here is my lesson to all the other comedians reading this: LEARN TO EDIT YOUR OWN VIDEOS.
I am convinced one of the reason my stand-up clips have amassed over 24 million views on Instagram totally organically is because not only am I the one telling the jokes, I am also the one editing the clips so my timing stays intact.
I see so many comedians with the same laptop and free editing software the people they hire have posting sloppy clips that don’t understand the timing and nuance in the live performance they’re showcasing.
Also, knowing how to cut video is a super-power and is increasingly easy. Why are you even reading this now? Go learn DaVinci Resolve.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Go to one live comedy event a month. Go to one movie in a theater a month. Pick two YouTubers whose work resonates with you and give them a couple bucks on Pateron a month. Understand the people making the things that transport you away from your troubles have rent too, help them help you.
