We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ben Livermore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ben, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a musician, I think about the output of the music but also the process itself – both being equally important parts of the greater creative process. Fundamentally, I endeavor to make the best art I can, serving the audience in a way that can hopefully spark emotion, uplift and inspire.
My work to date often centers around themes of upliftment and connection, grounded in relatability whilst also allowing the listener to develop their own relationship with the art. Creating helps me be more centered – there is a clarity and purpose I find when the work flows.
My mission is to create and release compelling work, whilst also empowering others to find and express their own creative impulse. Whether it’s producing, co-writing or mentoring – helping others find meaning through their art is foundational to my work as a creative. In a world full of distractions and stimulation tapping into ones clarity and a sense of meaningful work is ever-more essential. In essence, by creating, you give value to others whilst also nurturing your own wellbeing in the process.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up playing the drums, playing in various bands throughout high school, university and into my mid 20s. Performing at numerous venues and shows including drums and percussion for stage productions, alongside drummer, teacher and mentor of mine, John O’Connell.
Drums were my natural first step into the music industry, touring and recording with singer-songwriter Garrett Kato exposed me to studios, stages, production, songwriting and what it means to create and share music.
I now write and perform my own music, an indie-folk inspired blend of acoustic and contemporary sounds rooted in songwriting I believe in. I often write from the perspective of a hopeful upliftment, with a sense that everything will work out – themes of connection, admiration, love and wholeness are often found within the songs.
As a writer and producer, my goal is to capture the true essence of the song, always asking: How can we best serve the art and the artist’s vision? What worked in the past may not always apply now; every moment has its own unique magic. Embracing and allowing that magic to unfold is the most important part of the process.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Creating art that you love can be challenging. For me it’s when I get out of my own way and allow, that the best ideas flow. Being able to turn nothingness into something of value is a special feeling.
When the art connects with someone in a deep way, it helps them, they find clarity from it, or they simply enjoy it – there is now a greater purpose to the art. Yet even without outside affirmation, the knowing that you created something you are proud of, I believe is rewarding in and of itself.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative It can be a struggle to always continue to believe in yourself. The key to persevering is staying grounded in why you do what you do – It goes back to the mission I mentioned earlier. Believing in yourself as a musician means trusting that your unique voice is worth hearing, even when the world hasn’t yet caught up to it. The world may never fully catch up to it, reconciling this and continuing to create anyway might be the biggest challenge to overcome.
