We recently connected with Ben Crosson and have shared our conversation below.
Ben, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
For as long as I can remember, my wife and I have always donated a percentage of our income to our church home as a part of our faith. This was more daunting when I started my own business in 2020 but we continued to do so and sought to give additionally to other local non profits as we could. We were always taught to be generous and have been lucky enough to have this demonstrated with many friends and business owners around us. Through our faith and encouragement of those around us we have continue to put our ‘first fruits’ towards the church and its work through non profits and have not ever regretted it. In fact, it has consistently aligned with the growth of my own business as we’ve continued to be generous first with those around us. I hope this is an encouragement to anyone reading that leading with generosity lends itself not only to more success in business but more importantly in a more fulfilled outlook and wellbeing for us and and those around us in life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I never imagined that I would be living here in Nashville and doing what I do today. I grew up in Colorado and was always in church. I started as a worship leader in a youth group and eventually traveled to Europe for music at the end of high school. When I came back to the states, there was a need for help on the video team at the church I grew up in, and I decided to take on this new venture.
That ultimately led to me finding a love for the videography, editing, and content creation that I do now. My wife and I felt led to move to Nashville in 2015 with a couple of friends, having never been before and without knowing anyone there. We signed an apartment lease on the drive-here site unseen and committed to the new adventure. Through similar experiences in Colorado of simply saying yes to opportunities in front of us and being faithful to what we had, we both found careers here that have steadily led to both of us landing our dream careers.
I went full freelance back in 2020 amid everything happening, which didn’t make much fiscal sense, but we knew again that it was time for a change. Jesus has been faithful to us our whole lives, and this was no different. Since starting my own business then, I’ve had the chance to travel the country and work with people I never dreamed of, and these opportunities continue to grow every day.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I’ve maintained a website a social media presence to some extent so that I have something to show new clients if they ask, but I have found that the most effective way for my business to source new clients is through word of mouth. I’ve found it much more valuable to maintain good working and personal relationships with clients that ultimately lead to more clients and future work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’m very grateful to have found myself in a position where I get to work directly with many of the artists that I create for. Its incredibly rewarding to get to come alongside an artist and have the opportunity to help make a song or an entire project come to life visually in a way that they hadn’t imagined or been able to do on their own. For me this is often through live visuals, a music video or a piece of art and it is so rewarding to get to see it play out with their fans and add to the creative and artistic experience.
