We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful BEN BROOKES BELCHER. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with BEN BROOKES below.
BEN BROOKES, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As an Artist,it became very clear as the years passed to find a way to be independent and to have control of my creative process, as i got older. There is an age bias in this entertainment business and if you dont carve a niche for yourself you will be shut out. If you are looking for a major label that is still operating today , and hope to have support from them you will be disappointed. I made a living touring around the country in various outfits , but i found it difficult to write on the road and no time to record anything significant. I moved to Atlanta Georgia, with a producer and management team but that group ended shortly after landing here. I then decided to stay here and work toward my goal of owning a studio and releasing music thru my own independent label. I learned to produce , record my material and bought some gear as i went along and figured out what worked the best for our needs. We eventually figured it all out and the studio is called ” The Shack Studio” and Timberwolf Records is our independent record label.
We have released 7 albums and numerous Americana singles on all the major platforms, such as Spotify.com/benbrookesbelcher.
Our latest releases are ” Live at the Shack ” which is a a 5 song EP and Sept. 3 rd 2022 , will be the Debut of the new Ben Brookes Belcher ,single ” Dirt Road Man “.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ben Brookes Belcher was born in Lexington Ky. Raised in Charleston W.Va. on Belcher hollow Rd. a rural dirt road farm in the middle of coal country. 2 Parents and 2 sibling brothers. Raised in a tight knit musical family. His father played mandolin and guitar and was a natural entertainer. Ben played music with his father and uncles growing up there. As he got older he graduated High School and took a job @ a local music store. Later on he took a job with his father in the coal fields as a coal strip miner. Ben operated heavy equipment on the strip mine doing mountain top removal operations during the day and played the local clubs on the weekends. Eventually offered a job to tour with a group and did that until he moved to Atlanta Ga. where he currently resides operating his own businesses including a recording studio and independent label. .
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have traveled /toured a lot in my life, years, had experiences most folks wont have, and I’m very grateful to have those life experiences and skills , but as an artist there comes a time in life to evaluate your goals and where you want to go and how you want to go there. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself to stay in the game. Thats exactly what Ben Brookes Belcher did . You cant continue on the same path forever, cause that path might lead you over a cliff. The path and goals change over time and you have to figure that out before its too late. Now I’m a self supporting artist that can create, record, release music without relying on someone else or a record label telling me what to write, or forcing me to record songs from their publishing catalog that doesn’t generate ANY residual income for me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Writing songs is the most challenging and frustrating, sometimes agonizing, task in the music business, but when you’ve created something from nothing , that’s good/ great and undeniable. Its the best and most rewarding experience an artist can experience. Then when you record it well and it reflects the artistic vision you had in your head and then release to your audience, what more can you ask for? Its really as good as it gets?
