We were lucky to catch up with Belz recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Belz, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

Growing up I watched every musical show on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, and at the time there were so many shows like Hannah Montana, Victorious, High School Musical, etc. so singing and dancing was something that I had just thought everyone did. I signed myself up for voice, piano, and guitar lessons and immediately got started with learning jazz and classical piano techniques from the greatest teachers. Then, I saw Wicked for the first time in the third grade, and I heard the most amazing vocals and was astounded. I realized that I wanted to become that good, and I developed an interest in not only writing my own music, but also musical theatre. I then gave my first performance of “Stay” by Rihanna at a local town festival just two weeks after my first piano and voice lesson. I knew right then and there at that show that performing was something I loved doing, and I wanted to continue doing it professionally. I felt my hard work pay off with the applause, and even more so, I was proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to do it again.

Belz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I grew up taking voice, piano, and guitar lessons and then began songwriting at age 12. Growing up my teachers would tell me that if I could master jazz and classical music, then I could accomplish anything. I owe so much of who I am to my teachers at Onset School of Music, as they prepared me to be the best artist that I could be. Once I began sharing my own music, I realized that I loved telling my own story on stage at local talent competitions and festivals, and I decided that I wanted to get my music out to more people. Later on this encouraged me to release six singles that are currently out now under the artist name Belz! I love pop music with R&B and funk flavors because it gives me the opportunity to include powerful vocals, which are my favorite. I am currently continuing to create music with these flavors, and I am so excited to share more. While living in New York City, I have been able to share my music on many stages in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and it has been such an amazing experience.

In addition to this, New York City has also allowed me to pursue my other passion: musical theatre. I have been able to gain training in this area that I am newer to, and I will always be grateful to be able to pursue Belz as a songwriter, and Isabella Scolaro as an actress.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the feeling of accomplishment and self fulfillment. As an independent artists there are many challenges in getting your music out to a large number of people. Therefore, when I release music, while I acknowledge the importance of promotion, marketing, and setting goals for success, it has been so important for me to understand that the music is also for me, and I am putting it out into the world because it brings me joy to do so. If I am lucky, it is able to bring others joy as well, and that is always the goal. It is most rewarding to hear that my music has impacted someone else in a positive way, but is also rewarding to know that I have used my voice in a way that I want to use it and I can put it out into the universe no matter how many people listen.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

I think that society needs to have an open mind in order to support artists. In saying this, I mean that people must be open to discovering new music that they have never heard of before. Try not to be so focused on the most popular things and do some exploring of your own to see what else is out there. Doing this will support more artists than you know!!
