We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bella Kelly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bella, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As an artist, every project is meaningful to me. One reason being because you never know how your music is gonna impact people and help them thru difficult times or even just making a fun memory. I know the impact music can have on people so my goal is to help people with my music like music helped me. My first single ”Throat” reached almost a million views in a few months. That was amazing! Throat was written about my anixety. I struggled with panic attacks. It always feels like something has your neck and you have no control. In the video, I have david portray the anxiety. In the end I take back my power and control. I want others who struggle with panic attacks to know you can take back control. It’s not easy, but you can. My second single “Heartbreak Motel” surpassed one million views! I was happily overwhelmed with all the comments and support I got on that single. My song Heartbreak Motel means a lot to me because I wrote it about something I went through that was quite painful. The lyrics are from the depths of my heart and the tears from my eyes. I wanted to tell a story with that song, so the music video is like a mini film. It was shot by Vicente Cordero. He is awesome to work with. I was hoping others who went through or are going through heartbreak could feel heard/seen. To know they aren’t alone. We just finished up my new single ”Felony” which I am beyond excited to release! It’s like bladerunner meets heartbreak. It was an amazing shoot and we worked with a lot of awesome people.
Bella, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a singer/writer. I met david my producer/engineer, through a person we had in common at westlake pro in burbank before they moved and he picked me up as his artist. We started with a song I wrote called “Dark Barbie” after filming the music video for that, I wrote “Throat” then david decided to scratch “Dark Barbie” all together and move foward with “Throat”. We recorded it at harmony studios then went on to prepare for the music video. It was during covid so it was tricky to find shooting locations. We finally did, then we went onto shoot. We had the sweet talented Laney Chantal do the makeup and prosthetics (Rest in peace). Vicente Cordero as the director. I believe with anything you do in life you’ll need discipline. I practice vocals everyday for at least thirty minutes, That is one of the ways I stay discipined as far as my music goes. I probably shouldn’t be the person telling what sets me apart, so I will go with what my producer David says because in the end, he’s also the one who gave me the confidence necessary to do this. The first time we met, he says, he was enchanted by my voice, I remember saying “hi” to him and he had me repeat that because he wanted to hear the sound of my voice again, he says I sound like a real life fairy. Going forward, thank to months and months of hard work, my songwriting became much better because I had finally someone who understood me and made me feel confident about writing about my feelings, and, still according to him, my lyrics is what sets me apart. He always says that my words will touch the hearts of the people, of any age, and despite my young age I have an old soul that’s able to connect with people of any age with my stories and transfer emotions with my songs.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ulitmate goal is to help people, I want them to know they aren’t alone. To be able to put on music or in earbuds and escape into the songs. That’s what I did. I spent most of my childhood alone so music along with the pen and paper became my best friend and a healthy way to cope with things I went through and emotions. I want to teach others there are healthy ways to cope with trauma, anxiety and depression. When I was younger music and my writing helped me cope with the things I went through. I would like for my music and stories to really help people, those who experienced abuses or were left alone, abandoned, and people who struggle with mental health, people who were bullied, suffered heartbreak. Today those things seem to be in the background and people focus and put effort in silly arguments, but that’s my goal, I want my music and my story to tell those people they’re not alone, that there are people out there who care and relate with what they’re going through.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting to help others know they aren’t alone with how they feel or what they are going through. Bringing ideas to life while filming music videos is an amazing experience. I get to connect with people through my music and lyrics. I also get to meet other amazing, creative and talented people.
