Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bella Kaye. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bella, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve known from a young age I wanted to pursue music professionally. Music has always been my souls calling. For as long as I can remember I grew up putting on shows for my family, singing around the house, writing pretend songs, etc. When I lived in Chicago I was involved in the Children’s Choir, participated in school talent shows and musical theater, but it wasn’t until I moved to California when my passion and love for music started to get more serious. This was a turning point for me when I really discovered how much I wanted to pursue this path. I began to record covers in a music studio each week, performed in coffee shops and was eventually inspired to begin writing my own original music. From there, my musical evolution continued to develop as I went through my own experiences and personal journey of self love and self discovery. As I’ve evolved and gotten to know myself more, so has my sound. I now feel I’m finally making music that feels aligned to my soul. I’ve learned so much about the process of creating music (and will continue learning more as I progress in my musical journey). I now have a much clearer vision of the sound I’m trying to create and the artist I want to be.
Bella, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Bella Kaye. I make dark pop music with an emphasis on storytelling and emotionally introspective lyricism. I’m a very self reflective person, both in my songwriting and daily life so I value getting honest and real with myself. Songwriting is a beautiful outlet for me to pour out my feelings and connect to the vulnerable part of myself. This self introspection is a really big aspect of my upcoming 6-song EP, which is the body of work I am most proud of. This project has been years in the making, and it highlights an intense journey of self destruction I endured. These songs touch on some of the hardest things I’ve gone through so far in life. I go deep into feelings and situations I experienced in the lowest place of my life. This project is emotional and very dear to my heart. I think the most powerful and special part is being able to create art as a result. It feels so right to put these songs out into the world (coming 2024) and my greatest wish is for my music to be this vessel of art for someone to feel their feelings, allowing themselves to feel seen, heard and understood.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part is definitely taking a painful experience I endured and being able to transmute and transform that pain into art. I love the quote “music is the universal language of mankind”. To create art, put it out into the world and then see it resonate and touch others is such a fulfilling feeling. It’s a beautiful process to start with an experience, an idea, a story or concept and to see is transform through the stages of bringing a song to life. I like to describe it as this little seed that then gets to grow into a beautiful flower through the process of songwriting, music production, vocal arrangement, etc. It’s very cool to be actively involved in the process of creating, while simultaneously witnessing how a song flourishes through the beginnings stages to the final piece of art. When it comes to production, I love approaching each song I make with a new lens and seeing what that particular song needs to help illuminate the story I’m portraying. I focus on how I want to feel and allow those feelings to inspire the sonics and atmospheres created within the musical production and vocal arrangement. Vocal days and performances are always my favorite. Every time I’m on stage I feel so in my element, and it’s a beautiful thing to be able to connect to the audience in this way.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I love this question. I am driven by my purpose which is ultimately to live in alignment with truth, staying true and connected to myself, inspiring and touching others. It fuels me and brings me such a deep level of fulfillment to be able to inspire and touch others, especially through such a creative expression of myself. My greatest hope is that my devotion to following my dreams helps others feels inspired to follow their dreams as well. I am all about supporting each other, believing in yourself and all the possibilities that exist for each and every one of us. The support for my music and my journey means so much, and I feel very grateful. This gratitude certainly also drives my creative journey!
