We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bella Blu Zimic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bella Blu , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I started my business when we were given the O.K. to go back to school in person. I remember it was summer and I went to camp. I wasn’t used to wearing a mask so every time we went outside I would lose my mask. In the afternoon I would tell my mom I lost my mask once again…. She would stop sewing to make me a new one for the next day. Until one day she said Bella Blu I’m not making another mask for you, please be careful. I wanted to make my mommy happy so I gather all of my necklaces and bracelets and made a beautiful mask holder, I was so happy I was able to match the colors of my outfits, super colorful and unique and I even manage to get letter beads inside my craft supply box and personalized it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I want to make people happy, that is to me the most important. I see their faces when they buy my product and that brings me so much joy. I create because I love creating and I want everybody to feel loved when they wear my pieces. Each piece I make is unique and my treasure, one of a kind, a work of art and I want people to know I exist.
I want to inspire other kids to follow their heart just like I did and I want parents to support their kids in their dreams just like my mom supports me. I want my creations to bring peace and happiness to this world.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yes, I started selling my products on different farmers markets. My mom and I go to various markets in Miami to see what is the best for my creations, so in one of the markets where we go I would give this couple a business card every time they would pass by without knowing that they had a stack of business cards I had given them every time we were at that market and I would see them walking their dog. Until one day they came to me and said “you know what Bella, today I’m going to buy something from you! “ “you have given me your business card for a long time and now I want to support you.”
That day I knew even if I was giving the same person my business card over and over again, maybe my persistence will make them my customer.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that not everyone is going to take my business card. This is the hardest for me because I’m very excited to show everyone all that I do but not everyone wants to hear it. I had to unlearn difficulty and the feeling of rejection. I think not everyone is prepared to learn about me and my entrepreneurship. The love that I put in each piece outweighs all the No’s I receive. I had to unlearn that not everyone is kind so I tell them “have a great day” after they reject taking my business card.
