We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bella Alvarez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bella below.
Bella, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope that my legacy will be one of community. I have many people that have supported me throughout my different ventures and I have supported them with there’s. I don’t want to be selfish with my abilities, I want to grow by helping others. For example, I am currently collaborating with my friend Drew Gonzalez to create a bag. The process of screen print the bags by hand and working with Drew to bring out vision to life is more valuable to me than making the profit from the bags.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started my clothing brand Rebirth in the spring of 2022. I fell in love with printmaking in 2019 during my freshman year of high school and I hope to further my passion into a sustaining career. I printed the first launch of Rebirth from my garage. I live in Texas and printing in a garage in the summer was brutal but I didn’t mind it because I truly love this art form. As I continue to grow and release new products, I want to continue to screenprint everything myself. If had someone else print it for me I would feel disconnected to my brand as a whole because the process of printing is almost sacred to me. Rebirth is all about being authentic, if I like the design I’ll print it to share with the community even if others don’t appreciate it.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I don’t manufacture the clothing I print on but I do screen print on everything my self. I started learning different styles of printmaking during my freshman year of high school and I knew I to continue this passion into the future. I had to buy all the equipment myself and I set up a small space in my garage to print. I bought all my clothes off a bulk website and chose the cheapest clothing option. When I come out with a new line, I definitely plan on upping the quality of the clothes to make them more enjoyable.
Any advice for managing a team?
I am a one person team. Sometimes it’s hard to feel like I want to continue with the brand because of the lack of sales. I’ve only sold about 3 pieces so far and it’s been frustrating. I have to remind myself that while selling my clothes would be great, it’s more about the experience of creating them. I have to give myself more credit for coming up with and starting my own clothing brand at 17, doing everything by myself.
