Bekah & Rachel Rife, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When Bekah was traveling in 2023, she dreamed up the idea and name for The Rife Guide. She thought everyone goes to the Michelin Guide for food recs. Why don’t we start a guide that people trust for reliable and consistent travel advice? Our goals was to take the guesswork out our of where to go, what to do and where to eat. The Rife Guide offers concise travel tips and recommendations for the most exciting and desirable destinations worldwide. Our readers will find our articles presented in an approachable way without a lot of fluff. We aim to save them time and effort while booking their dream getaways.
Bekah & Rachel Rife, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are identical twins Rachel and Bekah Rife! The Rife Guide is your one-stop click for the best tips to maximize your time on the road. Having collectively visited over 120 countries, we help the-modern-nomad take the guesswork out of where to go, what to do and where to eat. Our story began over 15 years ago when we started passionately writing travel itineraries for ourselves and friends, and now we are doing the same for our readers! As our travel style is curious and eclectic, you will find luxury travel suggestions, adventure activities, flea market finds, street food musts and mysterious speakeasies all in one guide. They are blueprints to build your trip around, and then of course let your curiosity take over!
Our fascination with becoming global citizens began at a very young age while listening to our Indian-Singaporean grandfather share stories about his adventures throughout Asia, Africa and Europe. His most treasured memory was when he road-tripped with a friend from Singapore to London. Wow! The way his eyes lit up when he talked about his time on the road informed us that this was the kind of lifestyle we had to live. As we began to see more and more of the world our love for food, art and design grew too.
Throughout our website, you will also notice our love and devotion to the water. We grew up as competitive swimmers, water polo players and synchronized swimmers. These sports honed our love for artistic expression and all things water related. Another bonus that added to our nomadic spirits was competing throughout the United States with our teammates from youth through college. Now as adults, we have channeled this passion into surfing, scuba diving and free diving. We are enamored with the water and all the mystery and intrigue it offers.
Beyond seeing the world, we are passionate about building community, advocating for the planet, wellness, movement, cooking, and nurturing our spiritual practices. Occasionally, you may come across posts that delve into these topics, extending beyond travel.
However, what you can always expect when you visit The Rife Guide is concise travel tips and recommendations for the most exciting and desirable places around the world. You will find our articles presented in an approachable way without a lot of fluff. Our goal is to save you time and effort while booking your dream getaways. Think of us as the Michelin Guide for all things travel!
How’d you meet your business partner?
We are identical twins! We have had many iterations of working together throughout the years. Most of the time, we compete or perform together as synchronized swimmers. Launching and running The Rife Guide has been a very special journey. We are passionate about travel and felt called to have an archive of all our experiences and favorite places. TRG also keeps us connected, as we currently do not live in the same cities. No matter our geographical location, we work together weekly to make The Rife Guide the best it can be!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We were both very heavily involved in our other careers before launching TRG. Our workdays were long, and we had little bandwidth for anything else. We were both reaching burnout and knew creativity was missing from our lives. So, we started brainstorming together. We wanted the next revelation of working together to come to fruition. Bekah loosely thought of the idea for TRG, but nothing was fleshed out. We took two boot camps during this time – one in branding and one in blogging. These got the juices flowing, and we began to birth The Rife Guide.
We both needed to pivot to allow more creativity into our lives. We also wanted to share our travel experiences, which are such a huge part of our lives. If our articles could inspire or help just a few people, the effort would be worth it.
We tell this story to remind everyone we are multi-dimensional beings. We are not just our jobs, not just a mother, wives, sisters etc. Sometimes, we have to give ourselves permission to get creative and dream again. Don’t focus on the money or the end goal. Focus on what lights you up and what would bring more dimension and purpose to your life if you let it in. If you follow these simple questions, you will be amazed by the answers. They will lead you in the right direction.
