We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Behnaz Sohrabian a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Behnaz , thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
yes, I’m happier as an artist. But sometimes, especially when things get uncertain or exhausting before a show, I wonder how it would feel to have a regular, steady job.I remember once, after days of painting nonstop and feeling unsure,I thought maybe it’d be easier to just have a routine. But then someone connected deeply with my work and told me how it moved them ,and in that moment, I knew this is where I belong.

Behnaz , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started painting because it’s the only way I can truly express what I feel.My background in both science and art taught me to look closely at details while staying open to emotion and spontaneity.I paint mostly in oils, portraits, figures, and still life, using color and texture to capture energy and emotion. What makes my work different is its honesty and warmth, I want people to feel a connection, like the painting is speaking to them.my art is about emotion, movement, and celebrating the beauty in imperfection.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is learning patience and being present in the moment. Painting teaches me to slow down, to observe, and to connect deeply with what I see and feel. Every piece becomes a quiet conversation between myself and life.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Moving to a new country and starting over was one of the hardest experiences of my life. Everything was unfamiliar — the language, the culture, even the rhythm of daily life. But art became my anchor. Through painting, I found a way to express myself and stay connected to who I am. Creating helped me adapt, rebuild my confidence, and find a sense of belonging in a new place. That experience taught me that resilience often comes quietly — through patience, creativity, and the courage to keep going.
