We were lucky to catch up with Begonia López recently and have shared our conversation below.
Begonia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Since I was a very young girl, music, reading, drawing and filling very thick coloring books was my favorite past time, The youngest of six siblings that were also into music also motivated me as well as my my parents that were music and art lovers, I’m very thankful that my father played jazz records for me while I was playing with my dolls, he wanted to share with me his love for Gene Krupa’s solos. They also took me regularly to museums and galleries. As a teenager I started making drawings of the dresses I wanted my mom or the seamstress to make for me, design was a constant, I was surrounded by the fashion magazines my mom read but I also was playing a lot of attention at the layout and posters that magazines would have, so I knew I loved graphics and typography. I also had a passion for visuals and movies and early on I wanted to become a movie director and Peter Greenaway’s filmography made me realize I could use graphics in film and video and that’s how I really made my mind about motion graphics, it compiles everything that I love.
Begonia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I studied Graphic Design in Venezuela and got a grant to finish Graphic Design in Buenos Aires Argentina, where I started working on Post production while I was also studying at night. I did Art Direction for many TV spots and also motion graphics. When I moved to USA I started working in the design of Art publications for Art Galleries while I was also doing broadcast design and then moving to NYC crystallized my dream of getting involved in the creative process of developing graphic packages and identities for Features and Documentaries and fashion videos, in many cases since the conception of the project, to collaborate and help Directors and Producers in the decision making process and orient them in the best visual solutions for their pieces. It is a very detail oriented and exciting process, where listening and paying attention to the client and everyone that is involved is the key for a great result that is going to clearly communicate the message and its purpose in the most effective way. I enjoy the process of solving and creating visual solutions for a wide range of clients projects, I bring to the table a strong ability of listening and I’m aware of trends and its constant shaping and adaptation to what happens every day in the design and culture world, thats why I can easily move from Branding to Motion graphics to Art and Creative Direction to video art and feel totally at ease doing it
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Finding beauty in every aspect of life, also that that we can engage and motivate everyone with the right and strong visual message. People react to well designed projects and pieces. Creating visual solutions that can transmit empowerment and improving people’s loves is rewarding, originality and quality can be used to promote empathy and making me be aware of the differences in cultures and communities, enriches my life experience, it opens my mind to non linear thinking and I think it keeps me young.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non creatives may think that non tangible processes are easy and may react on the defensive to non traditional ways of thinking and working. Also non creatives and sometimes clients can benefit from a little insight and reassurance about what works visually for their project, thats why being analytical and creative at the same time would work wonders. My goal as a creative is to bring the best solution for my client’s visual project and that implies having my own professional identity attached to it, therefore my client should feel instantly confident that I’ll do the best to provide it with high standards and quality, plus a very educated eye. I need to feel satisfied by the result as well.
