We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bee Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bee below.
Hi Bee, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve taken a few risks in my life that have really paid off and helped me live my dream. The biggest risk I took was walking away from my 9-5 medical job 2016 to become a full time personal trainer.
I worked in the medical field for 18+ years. I started when I was in the Air Force right out of high school. But at my last medical job, the work environment was very toxic due to disrespectful co-workers and management and no advancement opportunities. A good friend of mine pointed out how much I work out so I should help others get in shape as well. Then I realized I found my out. I started working a small gym down the street from my house part time and worked at other gyms part time to replace my income and quit the medical field. I never looked back. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Bee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a fitness enthusiast. I got into fitness because I was tired of being skinny. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror and I had a friend that always worked out and he tired for months to get me into the gym. Once he mentioned all the ladies in yoga pants, I broke down and decided to visit the gym. Lol. I was discouraged at first, lifting light weights with terrible form but with the help of my friend and other competitive lifters at the gym I improved immensely in a short period of time. Now I’m grateful to do the same for my clients and fitness community.
Recently, I just released my new live fitness class app called The PLYGRD. On this app you can take a variety of classes (kickboxing, strength, stretching, etc) live and I’ll give you real time feedback on your form. You can also see other people in class as well (if they have their camera on) and you won’t workout alone. So you don’t have to workout to a video, I’ll be right there with you.
I’m so excited about it because I get a chance to connect with my clients, keep them safe and get them results. Plus clients are a part of a community so they won’t be doing this by themselves.
I want to make fitness simple and accessible to everyone on the planet.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, I would. Honestly, if I could go back, I would’ve started sooner!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When the pandemic hit and lockdowns occurred, my whole business changed. I had to find a way to train people from home so I ended up working for Beachbody. Doing that opened up my thinking and showed me a way to scale my business. Seeing one client at a time wasn’t working for me as much anymore and virtual classes became something I really enjoyed.
