We were lucky to catch up with Bee Janisch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bee, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
the mission behind kitchengoth, my in-home micro-bakery, is to make cakes that are precious to look at until you read the buttercream script. i want to make cakes that are rude & foul, just because i adore the contrast. i’m happy to have been able to turn something i love to do (especially when i’m stressed, which in 2022, is something that happens often) into a small business. i don’t think cake needs a specific occasion, sometimes you just need a “fuck it” cake & i’m here for that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
hi i’m bee! i’m a baker & got my start from my mom & her parents; everything i ate was homemade & birthday cakes were the most fun to help make. i’m the first of a family of bakers & cooks to attend culinary school, i went to schoolcraft college for their year-long baking & pastry arts program. while there, i loved to write sneaky & rude things on my projects. one of my final pastry projects was a white wedding cake covered in a red mirror glaze with a cookie headstone that read “you are bloody brilliant”. i dreamed of opening a bakery that specialised in break up cakes, divorce tarts, & just inappropriate sweets. the pandemic ended my work (& desire to work) in restaurants as a baker/pastry chef & i started to stress bake & eventually got a website set up for my blush-inducing cakes. it is a delightful endeavour & i love to have kitchengoth as a side hustle.
i’ve had so many creative requests from clients; from drag queen quotes to “congrats on your break-up!” cakes & even cakes for a bake sale that helped fund abortion.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
my goal for my teeny tiny business is for it to remain precisely that; i want kitchengoth to continue to be something that isn’t wildly serious to maintain. i balance my passion of baking with my passion of childcare & would hate for either of those interests to become something that just keeps me employed or something i could potentially grow to dread. i like to juggle interests so i don’t outgrow them. i think i have adhd.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
unless nft stands for “nicely favoured tarts”, i do not know what those are & i do not care to educate myself
