We recently connected with Bedon Lancaster and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bedon, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Definitely my new album “i love you i’ll die” which releases March 21, 2025. This is my debut project as a producer and mixer, and it marks the first time I ever truly pushed myself to record and produce my own music and make it my own way. I had a lot of help though from my dear and friend and collaborator Ryan Savage. Ryan helped me finish writing a lot of the lyrics, and helped me produce about half the record. He also helped me finish mixing at the very end.
I made this album from the beginning truly having no idea what I was doing. I bought vintage thrifted synthesizers and samplers and I wrestled with the technology until the album started to take shape. I think it is a testament to any creative that if you put your heart into your work, you can truly break through and express yourself more fully.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bedon Lancaster. I’m an artist and producer based in Nashville, TN. I was born in Mississippi and grew up in New Orleans and Memphis. I currently make experimental indie pop music. I love sounds and sound design and turning knobs on gear and writing songs.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creating. Being in the childlike state of creativity. That’s what it’s all about to me. It’s easy to lose sight of that along the way, with having to promote your music on social media and whatnot, and playing the comparison game. But the most gratifying part is getting to play. Getting to make sounds that inspire songs, or songs that inspire sounds. When I’m in that state, I feel the most joy. I feel the most like myself. I feel free.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Definitely making and mixing this album was a massive pain in the a-word. Ryan definitely wanted/still wants to kill me over how awfully organized or horribly optimized these sessions are. It’s like genuinely torture trying to work in them. And my computer is really not great for production. I would get system overloads like 24/7 trying to even listen to 5 seconds of a song. Each song has almost 120-200 tracks per session. I have never mixed or produced anything before this. It was like definitely a growth process, but I’m grateful I did it. My sessions these days are like 1,000,000x better. And I’m able to make things sound better much quicker. Live and learn I guess.
