We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Becky Tomaino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Becky , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have and it’s been a wonderful journey here. Never saying no in the first few years really made the biggest impact. When I started, I was still in high school and in college, I ended up making the decision to bring the majority of my studies online. This allowed me to finish my work wherever opportunities lead me and allowed me to work around my business.
I worked many different jobs to keep up. Meaning it wasn’t always how it is now but I wouldn’t change a thing. I can laugh now at the lack of sleep and the power naps in my car that made all the difference.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an overly sentimental person with a passion for capturing moments and making them last forever! Also, the girl behind Rebecca Lauren Photography. Personally, it feels like this industry was always a part of me. In fact, one of my first memories is carrying my Fisher Price Camcorder everywhere I went. If only that little yellow VHS tape really captured everything, now that would be a video I would love to see.
My background is not only in Fisher Price toy camcorder productions but in Sales, Marketing, Videography, Social and Digital Media Management, and Customer Service. This allows me to understand what is visually pleasing and make sure everyone has a positive experience.
My goal is to not only make you feel beautiful but allow you to have these memories forever! I give all images digitally, allowing them to truly last forever.
Rebecca Lauren Photography is a portrait and event photography and videography company. Specializing in natural light photography. The biggest part of my business is senior portraits and family photos. However, another huge part is event and company promotional videos. This is something that really puts me aside from the rest because I am able to not only capture still images but overall edited videos. I tend to do this mainly for companies for promotional content and full event recaps. However, I do weddings and personal parties as well. For example, children’s birthday parties. This is a great thing to have for the future and one less thing for mom and dad to worry about.
As for what I am most proud of, I would say is the variety in offerings and allowing clients the opportunity to create packages that cover their specific needs.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
It sure did! I would have never even imagined it working out the way it has. There is not a defined start to how this all began but reasons why I started and things that pushed me to become what myself as a person and Rebecca Lauren Photography have become. I have always been sentimental, I was a photographer for my high school’s yearbook. The moment I realized I could make this into something was when a senior approached me after seeing a spread I had shot my sophomore year and asked if I could take her graduation photos. That was my first ever Senior Session! Next thing I knew every spare moment was filled with a shoot.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Every single step of it! The capturing of a moment, the editing to enhance the emotions in that given piece and then of course the delivery and getting to see the look on the client’s face or the messages they send after receiving the gallery and/or video. Getting to create something that lasts forever from a collection of moments is what I would call the best part.
