We recently connected with Becky Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I have always had ideas in my mind about possibilities and potential things to create. Ten years ago, I came up with an idea about hand-painting custom signs which birthed Love My Town signs. It was all because of a desire to purchase a sign with my town’s name in a boutique store in our sweet, little town of Arlington, TN. I couldn’t afford it at the time and thought one day I’ll come back to purchase the sign, but that’s when God said, “Becky, you love to paint. Just get a piece of wood and paint letters on it.” Now, fast forward to 2023 and I have had the privilege of hand-painting around 3,000 custom signs for people. It truly has been an honor to be part of others’ lives in a special and unique way!
Not only has it been successful in my sign business, but in 2022 another fun idea that came to mind was writing a children’s book called Roscoe the Bossy Rooster. With over 20 years in elementary education, I blended my love for children and telling stories to write a book about my bossy and quite frankly mean rooster, Roscoe. I wrote my book based on situations from when I was a little girl out on the playground to situations a young child would experience. In the book, Roscoe can be squawky but learns how to treat others and recognizes the importance of forgiveness from his barnyard friends. I wanted to write a story that encourages young children as well as young-at-hearts to be inspired to remember what your mom always taught…”Treat others as you would want to be treated.”

Becky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an entrepreneur by heart and love children so I went to college to get my elementary education degree as a teacher. Over the years I have always been crafty and creating things. It really dates back to when I was 13 years old when I illustrated my own coloring book to sell at my family’s garage sale. I also designed and sewed my own stuffed animals too. That spark at such an early age continued into adulthood where I would paint thousands of signs and self-publish a children’s book. For both my customers whether it be a hand-painted sign or meeting people who have purchased my book for their children, I want them to walk away with something I created that will inspire and encourage them.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is having ideas that are in your mind and seeing them come to fruition. It brings me such joy! But when people give you validation by supporting me either by purchasing a hand-painted sign or my children’s book, makes it that much more rewarding.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Now that I have added writing children’s books as another creative outlet I do have a mission and message that I believe we need to get back to the basics… “Treat others as you would want to be treated.” In working in the elementary school system for years, I see the importance to teach children good morals. My love for children and telling stories drives my creativity to write more stories about Roscoe in his journey of becoming a better version of himself with the help of his barnyard friends.
