We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Becky Symes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, appreciate you joining us today. Often the greatest growth and the biggest wins come right after a defeat. ther times the failure serves as a lesson that’s helpful later in your journey. We’d appreciate if you could open up about a time you’ve failed.
I’ve been crafting brands for over a decade, whether for myself or others. And because of that, I’ve had more than my fair share of “failures” whether because businesses failed or I ran out of the enthusiasm or money required to make them succeed.
What I’ve found remarkable is that each “failure” has set me up so beautifully for the next iteration of what I do. Building a men’s fashion brand in my early twenties taught me about the trials and tribulations of manufacturing, the power of PR, and how vital a heart-felt connection to your product is. Creating a skincare brand in my late twenties taught me how to stand out in a crowded marketplace, the creativity that comes with budget constraints, and the importance of building connections. And in fact, those exact connections are what led me to where I am today. It was the people that I had met in this chapter of my life that gave me the confidence me to build a business around the unique skillset that I had acquired through every setback and roadblock.
So failure to me. Well, it isn’t really failure at all.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a big believer in the squiggly path and my road to this point was certainly that. After exploring various pathways of being a business owner, inside many of the industries that I now strategise with clients in, I landed on the place I feel best equipped to serve.
Currently, I work with personal brands and founder-led businesses and support them in bringing their big, bold, bright ideas to life. I do this through brand and website design, digital storytelling and vision strategy.
I pride myself in a unique and experience-honed ability to spot the potential, uncover the possibility, and design the digital foundations that can bring it to life. I adore what I do and nothing thrills me more than seeing incredible humans take a risk on the seedlings of their ideas.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My vision is a world painted with the technicolour of our wildest dreams and most innovative solutions (because let’s be honest – the horizon is bleak!) A future where we all have the courage (and opportunity) to take a chance an ourselves and the inspiration that we’ve uncovered.
I’m continuously inspired by seeing other women turning the messy depths of life into incredible ideas by creatively reacting to what they are so deeply moved by in the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think for me, it’s the perspective that I hold around emotions and their relationship to creativity.
We live in a time where we are more oversaturated than ever. Inspiration abounds, but so too does overwhelm. We have this access to everything, all at once, and have to know how to self-regulate in amidst it. It’s a lot. And it’s never-ending.
Through this lens, seeking inspiration can sometimes feel like a question of where we look and what do we have to not look at in order to “stay inspired”.
The personal response I’ve formed here is to view “life as a moodboard”. A perspective that the whole picture of life is what forms the greatest texture and that the emotions that arise from witnessing this full spectrum can be our compass when it comes to creativity.
It’s in no way a justification for the horror and injustice that occurs in the world, or an alternative to resolution and revolution, but more soa way to creatively digest. I try to keep these mental folders alive for all of the inspirations I’m moved by. Not every inspiration is an idea to pull on, but where there is emotion, there is possibility.
