We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Becky Strohl a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Copywriting might seem boring to some, but it’s an ever-changing landscape connected to business development, marketing, online society, and even the Metaverse! Only a couple decades ago, marketing and writing was primarily focused on print advertising, but now the internet reigns supreme. This has completely changed the kind of ads people are looking at, what they’re reading, how they engage, and what kinds of content is most appealing. This makes my job difficult sometimes as I constantly have to relearn messaging techniques, but it’s also exciting to explore the new possibilities that come with new technology and social channels.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After graduating with a degree in Philosophy, Political Science, and Spanish Literature, I wasn’t sure where my professional career would take me. Over the years, I’ve worked in various roles for nonprofits and big corporations. I’m always driven and have a knack for marketing strategy and captivating copy, so I quickly became the go-to expert on copywriting, marketing, and communications everywhere I went.
In 2018, I decided to expand my horizons by leaving the corporate space and launching my own copywriting business, Alpha Moose. Borrowing from childhood books about Morris the Moose, keeping it quirky with purple tones, and incorporating my passion for pencil antlers, the Alpha Moose was born!
Entrepreneurship is no cakewalk, though. Through many long nights, trial and error, and a strong women-led entrepreneurial network, I was able to gain the insight and support I needed. Over the past year, I’ve brought on three additional freelance writers to assist with the volume of work coming through our doors.
Today, Alpha Moose is a premium copywriting and marketing service offering the very best in brand strategy and messaging.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a pivotal part of any business, but most leaders struggle to find the right strategy. First, it’s important to understand that social media is an organic audience-building process that may take some time. It’s not a sales funnel, it’s a brand communication channel. Providing quality, interesting content and authentically engaging with your audience is key to growing your social media presence. Prioritize quality of posts over quantity, and if you’re able, pay for someone to keep the momentum going. Many business leaders struggle to maintain posts while also doing keeping their business going, so outsourcing is a good option for many businesses.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been referrals. Dealing with each client sincerely, honestly, and with integrity means that I put a lot of effort into getting each service just right and getting them the result they need. When clients can trust and rely on the quality of your work, they’ll come back again and tell their friends. Depending on the nature of a business, referrals alone might not be enough, but it’s an important place to start!
