We recently connected with Becky Pelton and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Morning , afternoon or evening. My name is Becky and I’m a small business owner and self made farmer. I have been around critters all my life but chickens have alway been my favorite. They are small, easy to care for and give me breakfast. I sell egg and chickens all over the US and every one that leaves my house is special to me. If you receive birds from me you will get as much help as I can offer. With large business it is sometimes difficult to reach knowledgeable staff. Because I’m the only one you get me for customer care and questions. I have worked for almost 15 to create a variety of chickens. Breeders use to tell me that I could not do what i have done. Well I proved then all wrong and working on a Bantam line of the same variety. My goal is to have my breed of chickens recognized by the APA (American Poultry Association) The only other women that has been recognized was Mrs Nettie Metcalf in 1905. My goal is to be the second Women to be recognized for creating her own breed.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I’m reading through all the question I need to answer and have found many don’t apply to me. I make my money by selling chickens and eggs. I also sell other critters on my farm. I started out very small with only a few animals to feed. I now have a beautiful set up with many different breeds of animals. I will never make a million dollars but I am happy making enough money to feed my flock and other critters.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am proud of everything I have accomplished. The biggest change I had in my business is when I was contacted my the Local 4-H agent. She found out I raised chickens. It started with me me donating several dozen eggs to their “Embro Project” I now work with 6 different counties, donate more than 20 dozen eggs and year, Judge the 4-H showman ship for chickens and I haven currently branched out to raise rabbits and Judge the 4-H Showman ship for them also . I don’t make any more money but it fills my heart to be able to share my love for my critters. I would not change what I do.
