We recently connected with Becky Morrison and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Becky, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I believe that an emotionally healthy environment is paramount for creativity and high performance. For people to do their best work, they need to understand the purpose of the project and feel connected to the team. The Light’s mission is to create that environment on set.
Every day, thousands of people work behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, each fulfillng a specific role: electrics run power, grips secure lights, camera assistants change lenses and boom ops hold mics.
Despite this organization the majority of the crew:
Do not understand the strategic intention of the project.
Cannot tell you what the job is for.
Do not know the names of the other people working on set with them.
Never see the final product.
This limits their ability to meaningfully contribute to the creative vision. It also makes work less enjoyable than it could be. My mission is to change that.
When I was a kid, my uncle was a tour manager for Michael Jackson, The Grateful Dead, Lady Gaga, Brittney Spears and Prince. I loved being backstage and experiencing this secret world of fast-talking men, catering halls and large metal cases. The huge pieces of equipment took my breath away and I yearned with every fiber of my being to have my own walkie talkie. I couldn’t care less about the watching the performance in the arena. I wanted to be behind-the-scenes … where the real magic was happening!
After college, I embarked on a career in the film industry. My first day on set, I was handed a walkie talkie and my eyes filled with tears. That feeling of magic grew each time I worked on a big-budget Hollywood production. I loved cracking jokes with the Teamsters, hanging out at craft service and watching the grips rig a taxi cab in the air in front of Grand Central. I couldn’t imagine a cooler job on the planet.
I noticed that the most successful projects I had worked on had that soaring feeling of cinematic magic. They had a sense of camaraderie, teamwork and flow. Even though each of us had a specific role, we coalesed around a shared vision that uplifted us all. The odd part was that this alchemy happened by chance. Some jobs had it. Others didn’t. It was unpredictable. There was no one on set dedicated to designing a collaborative and fulfilling environment behind-the-scenes.
A decade into my career, after I had become a producer, it still felt like I was the only one who could see this missing piece. I grew more passionate by the day about the idea of consciously designing the production experience. I scribbled notes and experimented on my own productions. Eventually I figured out how to design an experiential journey that reliably created an uplifting experience. It became the mission of my company & my life – to organize people behind-the-scenes to tap into their collective greatness.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Do you have a story of resilience you can share with us?
Everything in production requires resilience! It’s a roller coaster ride with challenges – some creative and invigorating, and others that are difficult and can question your resolve. Beyond the complexities of the production cycle, what comes to mind is how it takes resilience to challenge old traditions and introduce new ways of connecting and relating in the production experience. You have to be committed to the process and, for some, the shift starts with a great deal of skepticism – mostly born out of fear. So it takes resilience but is absolutely worth it. Not just for The Light, but for the change that is possible industry-wide.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Like many startup small businesses, especially those in production, I didn’t have funding: It was just me, a folding table, a cell phone, and my network that was developed over many years as an independent producer. Starting a production company was not something I considered before The Light, but it has been an incredible, ever-evolving, nonstop experience and I look forward to whatever comes next.
