Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becky Levin Navarro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Becky, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I have a love-hate relationship with social media. When I started my business in 2010 it was all about Facebook, then we started slowly hearing the buzz about Instagram which started in 2010 but didn’t grow in popularity until 2012. I was hesitant about Instagram until one of our interns created a profile and started posting for us. We decided that Instagram was going to be a hit for us to showcase all of the amazing work that we post about and took it under our wing in 2015. In terms of social media management, we manage our social media. Since we try to stay current with trends on Instagram, we have finally hit 15k followers since our start!
We did a similar delayed start with TikTok. Tiktok started in 2016 and I was so hesitant to use this platform and honestly said I didn’t have the time. I FINALLY caved in and started to work on it in 2022 and we’re loving creating new forms of content that are doing well on it!
I wish I had started all the social media platforms sooner. I’ve promised myself when I hear of a new social media app I will jump on it, try it out, and see if I can make it something awesome!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Pearl Events Austin is a design and event planning company based in Austin, Texas. We produce events in the luxury sector of event planning and strive to make each event unique. Our business is about 60% weddings, 20% social events, and 20% corporate events. We like to provide event inspiration and beautiful images from our designs for our followers on social media, along with the occasional behind-the-scenes fun!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Staying in touch with young adults has been crucial to our success. I am the membership advisor for a sorority at the University of Texas, and being around women younger than me helps keep me in touch with what’s happening. It also is great because their age demographic is the same age group as most of our clients. I’m 40 *almost, and as much as I’d like to think I’m cool *I’m not. College-aged women are usually first on social media trends and style trends and those filter into our design and what’s working on social media. It helps to find a younger person to mentor you to keep you on trend!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals from venues have been number one for gaining new clients. It’s important to figure out one lead source that you want to hone in on and work on that source, for us, we focus on venues. When I started Pearl, I’d send 2-3 sussies a month to venues (sussies are unexpected gifts) in the hopes of staying at the top of their vendor list because I would be fresh on their
