Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becky Dawson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Becky, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From my earliest memories, I’ve had a desire to become an artist. My journey began in childhood, influenced by my mom, a talented painter who pursued her art degree while I was still in elementary school. Immersed in her world of creativity, I occasionally accompanied her to art school, explored exhibitions, and explored the studios of her artist friends. Each experience left me in awe, igniting within me a longing for a life of my own when I was an adult, steeped in creativity and expression.

Becky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Becky Dawson, and I reside just outside the city of Portland, Oregon, where I pursue my passion as an artist and illustrator. Under the label “One Lane Road,” I design and manufacture a diverse range of gift products, which can be found at hundreds of retail outlets worldwide. Alongside this, I paint abstract landscapes and florals, and craft whimsical ceramics sculptures. Always exploring the creativity that has captivated me since childhood.
Unlike many, I didn’t follow the conventional path of art school. Instead, I honed my skills through self-teaching. After a decade working as a hairstylist, the arrival of my first child prompted a pivotal shift. Nudging me to start on the artistic journey I had long envisioned. With determination and resourcefulness, I jumped into screen printing, learning the craft through online tutorials and launching my own Etsy shop in 2011.
The response was for my screen printed goods was overwhelmingly positive, propelling me forward with each passing year. As demand surged, I transitioned from hands-on manufacturing to outsourcing, affording me the freedom to explore new avenues of creativity. In 2022, I converted an old garage in an industrial area of Oregon City into a multifaceted studio and gallery, welcoming the public for bi-monthly Open Studios—an endeavor that has exceeded my wildest dreams.
For me, art is more than just a profession; it’s an invitation into a whimsical realm teeming with mythical creatures, vibrant landscapes, and boundless imagination. While navigating the challenges of being an independent artist, I’ve found solace and joy in the connections forged with customers, fellow artists, and the local community. With each brushstroke, sculpted form, sticker, bag or towel, I aspire to delight—a testament to the enduring magic of creativity.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I have the privilege of transforming my wild ideas into tangible creations that resonate with others, who appreciate and collect them. As a creative individual, this is truly the epitome of fulfillment and success.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Thriving as an independent artist or creative isn’t your typical nine-to-five grind. It’s a lifestyle, a passion, an all-consuming obsession. In this industry, it’s often a case of “build it and hopefully they will come,” especially in the early stages. Steady income is a rarity. Nearly every successful artist I know relies on multiple income streams to sustain themselves, selling their creations. They’re true entrepreneurs, investing countless hours beyond what a traditional job demands. It’s demanding work, rife with rejection, leading many to abandon their dreams. But if you revel in the beauty and innovation that art brings to the world, I urge you to actively support your favorite artists. Whether it’s purchasing directly from their websites, visiting their studios or galleries, engaging with them on social media, or simply offering words of encouragement, every intentional interaction matters. These gestures not only elevate an artist’s quality of life but also provide the inspiration and resources needed to continue producing captivating art that enriches our lives.
