We recently connected with Becky Barnum and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My defining moment occurred over 35 years ago when I learned about hair extensions, recognizing their importance for individuals facing hair loss due to conditions like alopecia and trichotillomania. This understanding deepened when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and lost all my hair. As a hairstylist, regaining my confidence was essential, and I sought alternative solutions that would allow me to connect with my clients.
Throughout my journey, I formed deep bonds with clients who shared their own struggles with hair loss. I’ve shared tears and laughter with them and even donated hairpieces to those in need.
Ultimately, my defining moment crystallized when I realized I didn’t want to wear a wig, as it felt like a label that identified me solely as a cancer patient. Instead, I discovered hair toppers, and I was shocked by the exorbitant prices charged by many companies. This inspired me to create Hair Junky, with a mission to provide affordable, high-quality alternatives that empower individuals to feel confident and beautiful, regardless of their circumstances.

Becky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With over 35 years of experience as a stylist, I have dedicated much of my career to mastering hair extensions and continuously critiquing and improving my craft. I pride myself on pursuing ongoing education in the ever-evolving hair industry. My journey took a transformative turn when I faced my own battle with cancer and lost all my hair. This experience compelled me to dive deep into the world of alternative hair replacement, taking specialized classes focused on medical hair loss and exploring effective solutions to help those in need.
I take great pride in the deep connections I establish with my clients and fellow stylists, rooted in my personal experience. This shared journey creates an immediate bond, allowing my clients to relax and feel understood. I empathize with their fears and struggles, particularly the vulnerability that comes with facing the mirror and sensing the pity in others’ eyes.
I am proud of the extensive knowledge I have gained through my training and the unique experiences I’ve had with each individual client. Standing behind my products 100%, I find immense joy in witnessing the transformation in my clients—whether it’s a newfound confidence, a heartfelt hug, or tears of happiness.
Additionally, I am honored that other stylists seek my expertise to learn about my approach. My goal is to empower as many stylists as possible so that together we can reach and support those in need of alternative solutions for hair loss. I invite potential clients, followers, and fans to connect with me and explore how we can make a positive impact together.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
I started my business on a very small scale, focusing on finding reliable resources for hair toppers and replacement solutions. This proved to be a challenge, as locating trustworthy factories in different countries was no easy task. I began by placing sample orders of one or two pieces to evaluate their quality and longevity on myself, as I was committed to offering only the best while keeping prices affordable.
To fund these initial purchases, I worked an extra day each week in the salon and dedicated all of that income to place new orders until I found the hair that met my standards and trusted suppliers. As I gained confidence in my products, I gradually increased my orders, selling the hair and reinvesting the profits back into the business. This cycle continued for five years.
When I was ready to make a larger investment, I cashed in my IRA to place a significant order, once again putting all the profits back into the company. I still work in the salon, where many of my clients have witnessed my growth and expressed interest in supporting my venture, whether through monetary gifts or loans.
In the early days, securing a loan was nearly impossible due to my status as a newcomer in the industry. Now, I receive numerous inquiries from lenders offering substantial amounts, but I prefer to maintain financial independence. I focus on selling my current inventory and using those funds to purchase more hair, allowing me to grow my business sustainably.
